If your car is a DCT then get a DCT/GTS tune from Alex@Alpine. Best mod for the bucks IMO.

I'm just starting like you. I am happy with the performance and I realize that anything I waste money on will not really add much performance until you hook up the supercharger. So I am just doing some cosmetic modifications to start it off. I have no problem changing things that I can convert back if I needed to sell it. So I am getting rid of chrome (hate chrome) except on tail pipes and the M3 badge. So I got the IND Jet black front grills, side markers, and black front reflectors. See how those look then I will continue. Maybe, black rearview mirror covers, black sharkfin arial? Then possibly rear diffuser, front splitter, intake and cat back exhaust. All these things are easy do it yourself mods and are all easily reversible. None really add horsepower or compromise this sensitive engine. However, they are fun to do and can change the look.

I'll throw my .1 cents worth in... exhaust for the first mod. Sometimes I don't even listen to the radio just so I can hear that roar.

LUX H8 V4 was my first, but now I'm looking to replace those with some true LED rings.

I have the black grill inserts coming in soon and I am getting exhaust next.

I would suggest exhaust for your first big mod, but there are tons and tons of cheap cosmetic changes you can make.

Find a good 2-Day BMW CCA HPDE event at a track near you. You'll save a couple thousand, (even if you insure your M3 for the track day using a group like Lockton), and--aside from learning an incredible amount over those two days--you'll be able to make lots of contacts in the motorsports community if you get hooked.

Whoever said don't do it is right. It is like crack. Can't stop. However, if you are delighted with the performance then the list is short and way less expensive.

Work with Nate at IND for front painted spoiler, black grills, painted covers for the banana peel, painted side markers and the BMW performance rear spoiler. Depending on the colour of your M3, possibly a light window tint.

To make it more individual, get a set of wheels like HRE P40SC ( a little pricing but great looking wheels).

Lastly, I agree the exhaust needs an update. I have the DINAN exhaust with the straight racing pipes. Sounds incredible and the best bang for your buck in performance along with great sound. There is obviously other great sounding systems (personal preference) but for me this was my best mod, my dealership is a DINAN dealer as well, so warranty becomes a breeze.

Good luck and congrats,

Spending money on driving experience will improve your speed more than any mod can. Whether it's driving school or track days or just autocrosses it doesn't matter much at first, seat time is key.

If you want cosmetic changes then make those but those aren't really mods. It really irks me when people say they 'modded' their car with a keyhole delete and painted reflectors or even new wheels unless they get huge 18x11s and 315 tires or something. Those aren't mods, they are changes. Alterations.

I think the exhaust is fine but that's just me. My old car has a super loud exhaust and we couldn't take it anywhere it was so bad. You don't hear the stock exhaust much but that's the point. The engine sound is better.
Well said.

I can finally post to the modified sedan thread because i have black grills and at the time my track wheels on.

I went in this order over my 5 years and it kept me interested:

1st year - black grills, gills, painted reflectors
2nd - h&r sport springs
3rd - zcp wheels and 275 rear pss
4th - f10 m5 knob and m6 enamel m steering wheel
5th - aa signature then swapped for mpe

Oh, and for those that say mod the driver, my track time over the same 5 years-

2 BMWcca Oktoberfest hpde events
3 other BMWcca hpde events
3 skip barber schools
1 m school (free with the purchase of the car in sept 2008)

3 track weekends planned for next year

A great and sensible first mod.

A guy at my office put a clear bra on after owning the car for a year. Those rock chips are nicely preserved under the film.
