Other forum members might find a description of your procedure to get your car on the ramps and jack stands useful. You should be using a wheel chock in front of the rear tires as an added safety measure.

Fred,

I have an 2011 e90 335i sedan. It seems like the torin T43004 jack stands will suit my car very well. What would be the pro/cons between the torins and the ESCO 10498 jack stands.

1) The range of the Torin stands is about 11" to 16". The range of the standard ESCO 10498 stands is 13" to 21". In my opinion the 11" to 16" range is better for lower modern cars with the jack points in between the front and rear tires.

2) The base on the Torin stands is 7.5" point to point. The base on the ESCO 10498 stands is about 12" from one leg to the next. The ESCO stands will be more stable. When the jack stands are fully extended the ratio of the height to width on the Torin stands is over 2:1 and on the ESCO stands it's under 2:1.

3) The capacity of the ESCO stands at 6000 pounds per stand is twice as much as the Torin stands.

4) The Torin stands are made from aluminum and weigh less than half as much as the ESCO stands which are made from steel.

5) The Torin stands can be disassembled and stored in a relatively small space compared to the ESCO stands.

6) The blocks on the modified Torin stands will fit into the pockets on the BMW jack points (the unmodified Torin saddles don't work on BMW chassis very well). The 4" diameter pads on the ESCO stands have to support the jack point by the rim of the pocket. On some cars, if the jack point is close to the side skirts (like AMG MBs) then the rubber pad may interfere with the side skirts. This issue can be solved by using jack pad tool in conjunction with the ESCO stand, but, this increases the minimum height of the stands to more than 13".

7) The Torin stands can be adjusted in increments of 25mm (6 positions). The ESCO stands can be adjusted in increment of 50mm (5 positions).

In about three weeks (mid-November 2013) I will be offering a modified ESCO jack stand, model 10499. It will have a range of 11" to 17". The base will be about 10" from one leg to the next. The stand will use the same 4" rubber pad on top of the post. But, there will be an additional hole in the frame of the jack stand. So the post can be adjusted in 25mm increments. There will be 4 holes in the post with 7 possible positions. The price of the 10499 jack stand will be the same as the 10498 jack stand even though it is slightly smaller. The sales volume of this stand will be considerably less than the 10498 model. For now ESCO is considering this a "custom" product. I don't know how soon or if they will make the 10499 stand available to other resellers.

I will also be selling a separate post with a block that fits inside the BMW jack point pocket. This post will be made in the USA and have a rotating block on the top. It will only have three holes so the range with this post will be about 11" to 15" in the 10499 stand or 13" to 17" in the 10498 stand. The reason that the block will rotate is to facilitate the alignment of the block in the jack point pocket without having to rotate the stand. The target price for these posts is about $80/pair. I will be offering the 10499 stands with this post for $150. The $150 price will not include the post with the rubber pad.

I will post some photos in a couple of weeks.

1. set up the ramps behind tires.
2. go over stop and go hand signals (if using spotter)
3. confirm hand signals.
4. slowly reverse up ramps. i kind of envied dct owners for a moment.
5. chock rear wheels. (good tip fred, safety first.)
6. slide jack under car and jack up using the front center jack point. i positioned my jack by the driver door as the front bumper will be too low.
7. position stands. i raised the car to the point where the fully extended stand (no block) just cleared the front side jack point. if you do this right the stand will have to be lowered and then raised into place after the block was placed back onto the stand. using this method i only had to lower the car 1/2 inch or so, but the block is in position and in the void of the jack point. i was worried about missing the jack points and this was the safest way i could think of but took some extra effort planning out as i had never used stands before.
8. lower car slowly and get to work. don't forget your eye protection and gloves.

New ESCO 10499 jack stands at Reverse Logic

Reverse Logic is now offering a smaller version of the ESCO 10498 jack stands. Basically the new 10499 model stand is a 10498 stand with 2" shorter tripod legs and a 2" shorter post. The original 10498 stands have a range of 13" to 21" and the new 10499 stands have a range of 11" to 17". One other difference between the two models is the 10499 stands have two adjustment heights so the post height can be adjusted in shorter increments.

For low ground clearance cars with the jack points positioned between the axles you do not need a very tall jack stand to keep the tires off the ground.

Reverse Logic will soon be offering a custom post for the stands which will have a block mounted to the top similar to the one used on our modified Torin jack stands.

The attached photo shows the relative size difference between the 10498 and 10499 ESCO jack stand models.

It should not be much longer. We sourced some very cool spring steel clips that will allow us to attach the blocks to the posts without any fasteners. The posts and blocks will be shipped disassembled so that I can squeeze them into a small flat rate Priority Mail carton. The blocks will rotate 360 degrees and tilt 9 degrees in any direction.

LTP Torin T43004 jack stand pair

I have one pair of LTP (less than perfect) Torin T43004 stands available for $90 including shipping. The stands have some scratches in the outer red tubes, chips in the anodizing on the bases, and some issues with the powder coating on the blocks. This pair has the "fixed" blocks bolted to the saddles.

Never used. 100% functional.

SOLD! 10-Feb-2014

Torin stands will ship out tomorrow via Priority Mail. You should get them in time to do some work on your car this coming weekend!

Thanks for your order.

I rely heavily upon word-of-mouth referrals and will appreciate your recommendations to other BMW enthusiasts once you have a chance to try out the jack stands. The reason that the pricing is so good is that I foregoe the profit on the second set to drive more volume with my supplier.

Hopefully the custom posts will be shipping soon. I will definitely broadcast their availability here.

We started the production run of the posts with the swiveling/rotating blocks today! The blocks will rotate 360˚ on the posts and they will pivot 9˚ in any direction. The posts will have 3 holes positioned 50mm apart. In the 10498 stands the range with the custom posts will be 13" to 17". In the shorter 10499 stands the height range will be 11" to 15".

Unfortunately, the 10499 stands won't be in stock until sometime in April. But we will probably start selling the custom posts alone for use with 10498 stands which are already in the field.

Custom ESCO jack stand posts

I am almost ready to start shipping the jack stand posts with the swiveling block on top. Here's a few photos I took this evening after the Sun went down. The posts are stainless steel with three holes spaced 50mm apart. The block is anodized aluminum and is held in place with a spiral retaining clip. The snap ring retaining clip near the top of the post keeps the post from dropping through the outer tube if you pull the pin without supporting the post.

With the standard rubber padded flat top posts you don't need to be concerned with the way the pad is oriented in relationship to the jack points on the car. With the custom post, the pocket in the jack point needs to be aligned with the block on the post. The block can be rotated 360 degrees for easy alignment with the pocket in the car. The swiveling feature allows the block to self adjust to the angle of the chassis when resting one end of the vehicle on the stands.

Projected availability of the custom posts and blocks is mid-April. Unfortunately, both the 10498 and 10499 ESCO jack stands are currently out of stock.

More pictures of custom ESCO post

Here's a couple of more pictures of the custom ESCO posts. Even my neighbors who are not auto enthusiasts love this product!

Now accepting orders for shipment in mid-April.

Three pair of ESCO 10498 available

I located three pairs of ESCO 10498 stands. $130/per pair including shipping. 10% less if you take two pair. When these are gone I won't have any more until 12-May-2014.
