M5 vs M3+Daily Driver ?

I know this is a subjective question but if you have the option of taking either of the below options, which will you choose and why? (M3 can be changed to a different car with similar price and similar characteristic as M3 same applies to M5..!)

1. 2014 M5

2. 2013 M3 + Daily Driver (can be an SUV or sedan below $40,000)

Thanks for your opinions guys!

I did a 2013 M3 and modded it to 650 HP and also picked up a 2013 STi. But the alternative wouldn't have been an M5...it was a GTR or two year old 911T. Glad I did as the M3 has proved to be a GTR and 911T killer.

The M3 and M5 are two totally different cars. I don't think many people would cross shop these.

I love that these are your options! Both the M5 and the M3 function great as a DD... Just saying. Now if you're thinking about a dedicated track car, that's a different story!

I sold my STI - was great as a beater (and I mean that almost literally), but kind of sucks as a DD... Too rigid, too cheap interior, it's just not as nice to drive.

How does it hold up against a tuned GTR?

I would never dream of wasting money on a F10 M5. I saw one at my local dealership going for over 100k... ROFL. thats GTR, R8 waters. i understand if you need a sedan, but dam....

I would get either M3, a AMG, or RS5. not sure about the DD. what kind of car do you need? more of a performance car, or more practical DD ?

All day id do something like

X5 / Audi s4 6mt for dd

And

Gt3 or 997tt for weekend / track

M3 is good as a dd, many better options for track / weekend cars IMO

I agree with this. M3 and M5 are both daily drivers, both of which happen to offer incredible performance. The M3 is the best all-around car out there but to do that it makes compromises. If I were to switch to a 2-car setup, I would go something like Kenny suggests.

Here's how my old standard ESS VT2 625 kit did against the following GTR's that I ran on airstrips (roughly 40-155mph):

Stock 2013 GTR - 5 or 6 car lengths
Tuned+minor bolt on 2012 GTR - 2 car lengths
FBO 2013 GTR - lost by 1 car length
e85 GTR - lost by 3 or 4 car lengths but I hit the rev limit twice lol

Since then I have upgraded to a 650 kit and added water/meth so I should be running fairly even with e85 GTR's now...maybe 1 car length behind. I will get my shot later in Sept at the next Shift-Sector Coalinga Airstrip Event. There will be at least one e85 GTR there and probably a few. Mind you this is a $10-$15K upgrade for a GTR and some of these have blown people away by running with upgraded turbo (Alpha 9) GTR's.

On that track I've got a BBK and running camber plates and now with a dedicated 18" wheel/tire combo. This combo plus the power mods should be more than sufficient to handle a stock GTR given equally skilled drivers.

And even buying this fully loaded M3 new, I still have way less $$$ into my car than if I bought a GTR and left it stock.

A stock M3 has no chance against a stock GTR in any type of race but modded right things change.

Wow! Nice... No SC in the near future, so I'll stay humble for now!

I have no interest in driving a dull car every day. Buy a car you like to drive. Porsche Panamerica, M3, M5, M6 sedan, X5M, Cayenne Turbo, some of the newer twin turbo Audis if you need 4 doors. Lots of great choices. I like turbos because they have torque and torque is fun, but the M3 is fun if you work it hard.
