When should you brake-check someone?

Never.

Story: Motorcyclist cuts off vehicle and decides to do a brake check. Little did he know the consequences...

What was that dummy thinking? Funny how the driver checks his car first.

Another reason to have a dash cam. You can damn well bet that driver would have been found at fault and sued into poverty had he not had video evidence.

Garage List
I never break check
It's basically putting full confidence in the abilities of the driver behind you
Which judging by the way he's driving, aren't high
The best option to some bothering you or tailgating
Is to take your foot off the accelerator
So the car slowly begins to slow down
Very frustrating to the driver behind you
And before you know it, he loses interest and overtakes

And
Never ever break check when you're on a motorcycle

I knew it would be this video

No but I never ever brake check anyone. If someone "cuts me off" (which I don't take offense to these days), I simply slow down in order to maintain a 2 second distance between the front end of my car and the back end of the car in front.

Similarly, if somebody tailgates me, I simply move over these days. If moving over is not an option, I might slow down a little so I have more room to brake in case the car in front of me decides to slam on his or her brakes. That way, I can give the tailgater behind more time to brake as well.

But honestly this situation rarely (if ever) arises. Most of the time, I'm simply able to move over and let the tailgater pass.

Tailgating used to be a huge pet peeve of mine (it still is) but I've found that I've mellowed out over the years. Don't get me wrong - I would love to see tailgaters pulled over by the police, but I think the big revelation for me was that I should, in fact, leave it to the police. This sort of vigilante "justice" (brake checking) doesn't sit well with me.

Honestly looking at this video both people are at fault. Had cooler heads prevailed, this accident would not have happened, and it only takes one. If the motorcyclist hadn't brake checked, this wouldn't have happened. If the guy in the car was big enough to shrug off something as menial as being "cut off," this wouldn't have happened. A rational person would've simply slowed down the moment the motorcyclist cut him off, and the subsequent brake check wouldn't have even been an issue.

Hell, if anything, if the car had slowed down the motorcyclist probably would not have been angered into brake checking in the first place.

This is just a classic case of two small people with gigantic egos clashing.

Instead of brake checking, you can turn your headlights on, which turns on your night time rear driving lights, which appear as if you're "brake checking" but without slowing down. This only works during the daytime, and IMO is much safer that actually hitting your brakes.

These days, I just pull over if someone is tailing me that hard. You never know who that person is or what they're capable of.

I ride a motorcycle and no way in hell would I ever break check a car, that's a losing battle. I do however carry 6 gauge BBs in my back pocket and if someone is being a super dick--i just throw a couple over my shoulder, down shift and I'm gone; leaving the person with a shattered windshield. I have yet to do this to anyone though, rather avoid drama.

Lucky he didn't run him over. What a douche and retarded move to brake check with a bike, sure looked cool on video till he wiped out.

If someone is tailgating me I will press the brake just enough to illuminate the brake lights. That usually backs them off.

Biker was definitely a douche, but the car driver wasn't exactly right either. Better to just slow down, move over, and let the asshole go.

Wouldn't that affect other innocent drivers as well? Or are these some remotely detonated BB's that can dissolve after they do their intended job?

I know if you were on a bike and tried to drop BB's at some car and they end up hitting/damaging my m5, I'm coming for you like the grim reaper.
