My car is a 10/08 build date and I loaded it via USB stick just fine. Download the file first, put it on USB as instructed, put it in the car in the glove box...if it doesnt bring up the prompt regarding the updated data within a minute or two then you probably need the dvds.

The prompt appeared...uhh...promptly ( ) on mine.

Note: I believe the software version has been updated in my car, but have not confirmed. Not sure if that might make a difference.

Sounds like a good idea! Thanks guys, I'll try it tonight and report back with how it goes. Wish me luck.

What do I need to do? Is it possible to update software and maps? If you could give me step by step instructions I greatly appreciate it.
If you want the new design, you need to do an entire CIC retrofit. Not hard at all but it will require hardware changes. Patryk bimmertech could help you out. THat's where I went to for my 2008 335i.

If you just want a map update, you can download the DVD that's here somewhere but it doesn't change any user interface, just "newer" route info.

My friend has a build date of 06/2009. His software has been updated to the latest. He was able to import the map using the USB media via the glove box.

If your software has never been updated, chances are you won't be able to do the USB update. My suggestion is to actually purchase the software update from your local dealer (you will need to bring in the car to them, sometimes overnight). This shouldn't cost more than $300 (my old car was about 200). Sometimes free sometimes not, depending how you push it but that's another topic. While they're updating, you can download the maps onto 32gb usb, and buy the code from sergej. Net total: max 340 probably. And you have the newest software, 240E+

This route is cheaper than just bringing in the car to have the dealer do the map update. I think they might update your software then upload the maps or maybe use a set of DVDs to load the maps for you. Either way, dealer prices on navi updates isn't cheap.

Like other said, best way is to download the USB first and then plug in glove box. If it pops up, you can buy the code, Sergej will get it to you pretty quickly. If not, do the above.

I had no luck with the USB, I guess my software has never been updated! I don't need the maps that badly so I'm gonna hold off on the getting the software updated. Perhaps if I can find an independent shop that does it for cheap.

Also, I heard the software update, updates the software of the whole car and my car does have the Dinan software upgrade so don't know if that's separate or it would interfere with that.

Ooh yeah if you have the dinan software I believe it will overwrite that. Find a dealer that is also a Dinan shop and you might be able to get them to reload it for free after a software update.

I noticed after I updated, it doesnt say the street names of where i'm supposed to turn, it just says 'prepare to turn right', etc. I tried default and short speech mode but neither of them fixed it.

Any ideas?

I've got a 2010 M3 with 2012 Map update and don't recall Navigation ever doing text-to-speech street names. What year is your car?

I downloaded the 2013 file in January and finally got around to doing the update the other day. Took about 1 hour of drive time. I turned the car off twice during the update and it continued once I started the car again with no problems.

Pretty much the same for me. It took about 1 hour to load the maps from the USB. I connected my charger to the car and just left it in accessory mode. If I sat in the car and played with the menu, the car stayed active. But if I left the car and went inside, it would shut down after about 5 minutes. But no problem, as when you put it back into accessory mode, it boots up the install again after about 10 seconds, and carries on where it left off. I let it shut down 3 times without issue. But it does take about 10 or even 20 seconds to restart the install. Just don't panic. Give it PLENTY of time to see the USB stick and restart the install.

It also took about 5 minutes after the install was done for the version info to show up on the options/info screen. But it now shows 2013-1A maps installed!

Just started it up again now
You should be ok now

I can copy it and mail it back
Just make sure it's big enough

That is such a generous offer! I did install a download manager instead of using the default internet explorer downloader and it was succesful. Thank you very much for the ability to get this update kmarei ! ! !
