What makes you say that? Lack of power?

Partially lack of power, but mainly lack of stability in high speed transitions (at least with stock suspension). I had 2 Cayman S's, first gen and second gen (986/987), and neither one could go through the esses at VIR as well as my dang M3 that weighed 700lb more. It was embarrassing. Lap times were 2:21 ish for Cayman S stock on street tires and 2:17 M3 stock on street tires.
Not that the M3 is a bad track car, quite the opposite. But I was perplexed that my 3600lb car couldn't keep up with my 2900lb car. Same driver (me) same temps and time period. I wrote up a comparison and posted it here and on the cayman forum if you're interested in more detailed comments. Magazine editors swear the Cayman is a good track car because they drive 8-9 tenths. I had the great fortune of hanging out with Leh Keen at a few VIR days, and he was the first person I've met that also thinks the Cayman sucks on track. Not trying to compare myself to him in the least (I'm a day 1 noob compared to him), just found that interesting. Something to do with the suspension geometery; out of my field of expertise. All of this ragging on the Cayman aside, it is a wonderful car in town and for mountain roads, and is beautiful. Don't drive 10/10ths on mountain roads, folks! |

I finally had the chance to see the new Cayman S in guards red today. Beautiful car....looks exotic. Trying to figure out a way to make more money so I can keep the 1M and get the Cayman!

AMG?
GT3 would be most fun but not most comfortable.....RS5 has comfort but it's no M3...........if you need AWD in snow (I do), I'm waiting to try the E63 AMG S----major power, can track it, amenities inside. No one here likes AMG??

Glad to hear that, the engine seems pretty amazing. The amount of time I would have fun driving it to work (and listening) outways it's heavy track status. It would be replacing my 2011 S5 as the winter car......I'll not ever give up the beloved M3......

None of the old M5's will compare to the new one.....would be constantly...a little sad knowing a much better beast exists.

I currently have a E46 M3 ZCP and wifey traded in her 2011 X5M about a month ago for a S6 and it really made me start looking a lot harder at Audi.
I was kinda in the market for a new car, preferably a 4 door and went to the Audi dealer to test drive an S4 but they had a BEAUTIFUL RS5 sitting there, so, I just had to drive it. Needless to say, the car is flat out phenomenal! Now, I'm a huge BMW M fan but I can't deny that after driving that RS5...I am seriously considering it. The car is gorgeous inside and out and it just looks and feels more expensive than an E92 M3. Steering is so much better than most on this forum realize. Its heavy, tight, and very precise. Not as perfect as my M3 but damn good! Nothing like the other Audi cars. Engine and exhaust note sound amazing....especially the throttle blips. It handles superbly...really holds the road, doesn't understeer, and feels very planted. The car inspires a lot of confidence in you while behind the wheel. Audi's MMI system is top notch and I definitely prefer it over iDrive. The navigation with Google Earth is awesome! And, of course....I just love its a NA V8! All in all, I'd love to own this car and never thought I'd see the day where we'd have two Audi's in the garage but I can't deny how great the S6 and especially the RS5 really is. I'm still thinking about it because I didn't really want to add another 2 door sports car/coupe but the RS5 was just that good. |

I too went to look at RS5 the other day but I came away underwhelmed. I currently have 03 A4 and I just got rid of E92 M3 which I drove for nearly four years. Since I'm a car guy I thought I'll get RS5 while I wait for LCI updated M4. I do agree that RS5 looks awesome and sounds awesome as well. I test drove a fully loaded model. That's were pros end for me. Interior is ok, nothing special, dashboard is right out of A5 the only things RS5 adds to distinguish it form A5 is a steering wheel (very nice) and shifter. Materials used for dashboard felt very cheap especially hard plastic in front of the passenger. My old Audi has higher quality materials inside it for instance. The back seats are also useless, once I set my seat for comfort (I'm 6' 2") I couldn't fit anybody back there. Front seats are also not as good as M3's, no adjustable side bolsters and they felt pretty hard for such an expensive car. Audi's DCT was also disappointing, there was a delay between paddle shifter input and gear change and I constantly would pull turn signal/wiper/hi-beam stalks instead of paddles...this was annoying. Engine, while awesome sounding doesn't have the urgency S65 has. Last, throttle response wasn't there either. This car was worth about $55K to me and not $80K they want for it. After I was done with RS5 I immediately put a deposit down on a new M4. Last edited by Chill72; 08-25-2013 at 02:01 PM.. |
