OEM or aftermarket CiC upgrade

I have a 2008 M3. The NAV computer is dead. I could replace it with another CCC but if I have to spend that much I might upgrade it to the newer CiC. This needs "codes" to work with the car. You can buy them from BMW or use an aftermarket hardware device to activate it.

My question is... What are the disadvantages to the hardware activation?

Hardwire activation could potentially interfere with other systems in the car, however, I've never heard of this actually happening. Also the dealer will not be able to update your car. You'll have to go to an indy shop that can do individual module updates if you need reprogramming. I've been using one for quite some time with no problems.

From other posts I have read, dealers have refused to reprogram cars unless the CCC was put back in. Therefor OEM or aftermarket make no difference except for the price.

How often do you plan on updating software at the dealership? Since you're out of warranty, I doubt this would be likely anytime soon. While the dealer may have trouble, there are always independents that can perform "per module" updates if needed via autologic.

I wouldn't worry about it, or simply have the vehicle updated before converting to the CIC if you're looking for peace of mind.

Give me a call if you'd like to discuss further.
