Ramadan Mubarak to All!! If you don't know what Ramadan is, look it up on wiki..lol...even though the days are long keep focused at don't watch the Food Network! (BTW does everyone realize in 3-4 years we're gonna be fasting in the summer??

Ramadan Mubarak to all! I was actually going to make this thread yesterday myself but I was busy, lol. How has the fasting been for everyone? 15 hours is so long! also, summer will tough in a few years!

But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face so that you may not be seen fasting by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will repay you."

Just something to keep in mind, even though it is from a different religion.

My coworker was telling me about this. He said he fasts by combing his hair and looking good, not by not eating/drinking

Then he misinterpreted it..
It is meant that you should fast, while looking as if you were going about every day life.
It's basically meant to say, that you shouldn't 'brag' about fasting.

EX: If I were to fast for a month and go up to someone and say, "ya i've been fasting for a month or so now, you've only got what?? one week on you?"

Fasting should be kept between you and god.
You may have different beliefs, those are mine.

yah that's one of the major problems he has with his faith. he feels he can interpret the way he thinks is right and that other people should not tell him he's wrong or something... anyway, it was a long discussion yesterday, and since i was fasting i dont remember much of it

he also mentioned that it should be between him and God, and told the example when Jesus was asked why his disciples do not fast as much as John the baptist's disciples.
But for us, muslims, we do everything in a large community, especially praying and fasting

on a side note, i dont want to hijack the OP's topic, so feel free to create a new thread if you feel you have things to say

That is precisely the Islamic belief, It is something that is done between the person and God. No one will truly know if you are fasting - Someone can say that they are fasting, but only God is with them at all moments to know if they are truly fasting.

In Islam it is recommened (but not required) to fast throughout the year, but when you fast outside of Ramadan, you should keep it very private. Ramadan is a holy month in which all muslims who are able to fast, are required to fast - so its not boastful to say your fasting during Ramadan.
