1200 mile Differential Fluid

I recently had my differential replaced under warranty for what sounded to be a bad bearing along with a strange and unusual clunk on/off throttle (not the same as 1st gear/2nd gear clunk common on M cars). I put 1200 miles on the new (refurbished) diff and took time today to change the fluid.

Take a look at the old fluid

You can see the fine metal particles in the fluid.

The old fluid looked darker but healthy.

Left New. Right Old

Since mostly everyone takes their car to the dealer to get their 1200 mile service, no one gets to see their old differential fluid after the service. From the condition of my fluid, you can see why it's so important to change during the first 1200 miles.
