repair manual

where did you get that repair manual from ive searched online everywhere for it im referring to the one in you r how do change your oil post.

When I had my E46 the car was completely maintained by the dealer. But with the E92 it has been a different story. I am interested in trying out the Liqui Moly 10w60 for my 1st DIY oil change, could someone recommend a reliable source to buy it on-line (or locally around Orange County CA)

Exactly how do you "try out" an oil. How are you going to know if it's as good as the Castrol?

So I see some conflicting information in this post:

1. Everyone starts off saying 25NM on the oil filter cap...however then it was posted that it should be 40 NM? The cap on mine states 25NM so should I stick with the cap or tighten to 40NM?

2. Multiple different sizes apparently on the drain plugs. I read 4 different sizes in this post.....M6, M8, M12 hex patterns and then T-40 torx????...can anyone confirm torx or hex pattern? I slid my arm under my car, but did not have it up on jacks so I was unable to see if it was torx or hex pattern, the 6mm hex does fit, but there is some play. So I checked what size a T-40 torx is and apparently it is 6.65 MM. ...See link below...

I am 99% sure it is a T-40 torx. I could see how you can get away with using a 6mm hex, however. People have left comments on my video saying that I was incorrect about it being T-40 torx, that it really is a 6mm hex.

1. I've purchased one-day subscriptions to BMW's TIS to get the exact torque specs and steps for various procedures, including changing the engine oil. The torque spec for the oil filter cap was revised to 40 nM according to TIS. If you have any doubt and are concerned, I recommend you get a TIS subscription ($30 for the day) and confirm for yourself; that's what I did.

2. The drain bolts are definitely not Torx, although a Torx bit may work. They are hex bolts, although I could not tell you the precise size. I changed my oil just two weeks ago and on my 2011, the bolts are hex. The stripped drain plugs are probably due to over-torqued plugs. I highly doubt you'd have problems if you should use the torque specification from TIS.

Just changed my oil today, it's definitely 6mm hex for the drain bolt, torqued to 25nm.

hey guys, is the oil pan drain bolt the same p/n as the front sump's drain bolt?

Real OEM doesn't diagram both bolts, but for the bolt, they say I need x2. My bolt is stripped, so gonna need a new one.

I just bought Mobil 1 5w-30 full syn oil, will this be ok for the engine? I see 0w-40 and 10w-60 alot too.

I would not run 5w30 in an E9x engine. 10w60... TWS is best but I wouldn't hesitate to run Mobil 1.

Great thread, and a big thanks to coogs08 for his video. Changing the oil was a very simple operation, but it always helps watching someone else do it first! (I really saved myself some trouble hearing the tips about putting towels down around the oil filter housing.)

Also, just to throw my personal experience out there: I pulled the drain bolts with the engine warm (had been driving it about 30 minutes prior), and then allowed it to drain for approximately 2 hours (it had still been dripping a little until about this mark). My front end was up on jack stands, and my rear was lifted slightly higher on jack stands as well.

I filled (after a number of iterations of filling) a full 8.8 liters of 10W60 before my car's digital display read 1/2 way between MIN and MAX. After another 600 miles of driving, I have experienced no change, so I believe this to be fairly accurate.
