Besides the awd, you would have the easiest time getting the new m3 with a tune and surely would get to 550 which is maybe too low but would be a nice new package and a relatively low attention car

^ OP says that he wants higher power and AWD to handle it. Personally if I were the OP, I would follow the 911 if I were on a budget. If I could spend more, a Stasis supercharged or Underground Racing/Heffner/AMS twin turbo R8 V10 seems appropriate.

I say go for the R8, it will be tougher to make big power but it will be much more planted.

My father has a 997tt with a tune/exhaust and on hard acceleration the front end is extremely floaty. I hate the feeling. The Porsche will most likely need extensive suspension work for it to feel as planted as the R8. Either that or get a 430 Scud. You dont need more power.

By adding the TT, you know you're then obligated to make a trip to TX2K, aka "The Superbowl of Street Racing" where TT Gallardos and TT Aventadors come out to play

And UGR has some 1500+ Gallardos rolling around, so it wouldn't be a stretch to say that there has to be a 1500+hp R8 out there somewhere.

UGR Audi R8 TT 20-180mph in ~11 seconds

Yeah I've seen that. I'm not much of a street racer...I pretty much stick to the speed limit around town so I wouldn't be much fun there.

The Airstrip "roll-on" scene is starting to get some traction here in SoCal. A boosted R8 hasn't shown up to any of these events so maybe I give it a shot

My assumption is that this TT kit costs more than the actual R8 itself?

Nope. Considering that you just purchased an M, and reading a few of your threads, (it sounds like) you're eventually going to go VT3, the 1000 awhp kit (on C116) comes in at an affordable is $39k installed

Now if you want to get the big dog kit and go with 1500+ hp, then yes, you will be forking over some *serious* coin.

Wow that is fantastic bang-for-your-buck. Particularly worth it if I find a nice pre-owned v10 R8 in a couple years. I owe you a ride for this good news.

I am/was contemplating something a little different than a VT3 build with the M3. I want to extend the RPM band to 9,500 or higher. It would still produce power with the centrifugal blower. This would require springs, rods and software from initial research...and isn't as costly as the VT3 build. The only issue I'm finding is whether the DCT can rev this high. It all may be a moot point however if I have soemthing like the R8 to look forward to and will just allocate $$ for that endeavor.

If you want a numb car buy any of the two. If you want something more than a blunt instrument get a GT-3 RS.

It's interesting that you and I think along some of the same lines. When I picked up my used M3, I made sure it was a 6MT, as I had (and still have) reservations about the long-term reliability of the DCT w/higher HP. Drew's build verified that I was right to be concerned. Granted, the DCT is faster, but I don't feel like replacing a tranny every couple years.

I've been looking at the HP to $ ratio of making respectable power out of the M3 w/a supercharger, and have been extremely disappointed w/the M3 tax burden that is placed on us. I understand that you have to pay to play, but I can't quantify that kind of $ and then getting stomped by so many cars on the street and the track.

My end game is to finish out the M3 by the end of this year w/a used s/c. Mid next year, I then plan to buy and start building a 1000-1200rwhp 6MT MKIV. That'll satiate my desire for an overall street/strip/rolling fast car

Do out still want 800HP or do you want the 1500+? The second will be very fun. Can I have a ride too? I think I mentioned the UR kit earlier. Lol

Yeah the DCT can't handle a lot of torque (the 335is guys are finding this out now) and from what I'm being told, doesn't like to rev beyond 8,800 RPM.

It's a very nice balanced car, but for the $$ invested there are a lot of other cars that are faster/better.

The MKIV is a better platform for high HP. Just have to deal with crazy turbo lag and traction issues.

Sure I had out rides to anyone that wants them. The Stage I sounds good to me. 700 AWHP on pump gas and 1000 on race gas is plenty.

Lag isn't much of a concern when you're racing from a roll

If you're looking at a v8 R8, look at the Stasis toots blower. If at the V10, VF Engineering has a bolt-on roots blower kit, GMG racing, AMS , and of course underground racing, have turbo kits. IMO, go with the 997tt if you're looking for the more performance oriented car. However, the 997.2 has it's limits.....the limits of the PDK, DI fuel system, and stocks rods are being reached with a simple tune and exhaust. As for the 997.1, it will be an expensive car to get power from.....you'll need an upgraded clutch (if you decide for a 6mt), brv's, tune, and full exhaust to make 550whp to 580whp and it will cost much more ($7500-10,000) compared to a GT-R (which you decided against already) which will cost around $3000-4000 to make the same power. One you decide to go to upgraded vtg's, the costs quickly accumulate......definitely not cheap cars to mod.

Not sure if you're considering a sedan, but the w212 e63's and cls63's with m157 are making amazing power with very few mods. Weistec and AMS have already made bolt-on turbo kits making 720whp and 780whp respectively. Weistec uses stick frame turbochargers and their upgraded turbos cost around $8500......a "bargain" for the kind of power those cars are making.

Thanks this is all good info.

I am impressed with the new Merc's...and while a E-class or CLS is just too large for my taste, I would be lying if I didn't say that I'm eagarly awaiting the new C-class with a TT V8. I don't care for their looks, but with the potential of a bullet-proof engine, a turbo upgrade could be a nice, and potentially inexpensive alternative. I'm pretty set on a 911 or R8, however at this point.

I wouldn't say any engine is "bulletproof". I had heard that the R8 V8 engine is very reliable however mine failed at 28.5k miles. It got a brand new engine but just giving you a heads up, and it aint cheap to replace.

Could you PM me the price of a new engine? I am looking at a B7 RS4 for a daily, which uses the same engine. Thanks

Oh sorry I was referring to the Merc, not R8. The current C-class with the upgraded PP option has the SLS internals and can withstand quite a bit of boost...and I'm assuming the new 4 litre TT motor due in 2014 should be equally as stout and could make some insane power at say 20+psi.
