TPMS Malfunction

I'm getting the TPMS Malfuction. 2008 E90 M3.

I have tried 2 different sets of wheels/tires and neither will work. The tire shop has a handheld scanner that reads the TPMS sensors in the tires and they have all been verified working. They also verified the TPMS pieces in the tires are the correct ones(and actually they were working in the past on my car).

We have reset the TPMS system on the car with the iDrive about 20 different times, every way possible. Car off, car on, drive 20 miles, resets, blah, blah, blah....etc. Each time it just comes back with TPMS Malfuntion.

Soooo Is there a TPMS part on the car iteslf (not in the tire) that I can somehow check?

TPMS module on 08s is in the right rear quarter panel, accessible through the trunk. Remember when we coded your EDC off? It's right next to it.

On 10s, it's in the right rear wheel well.

I guess you could check it's properly connected?

There are other things aside from the TPMS themselves that can cause the light to come on. The system itself may have a problem.

Yes that is what I'm referring to. Does anyone have some insight on this?

You would have to use something that can read the car other than a TPMS tool. BT tool or a dealer would be needed on this.

It happened to me before for a couple weeks, but it went away on it's own & works fine now.

Are you running OEM sensors or aftermarket? My SA told me they were having some trouble with cars with aftermarket sensors so that might be something to consider.

No. 2 different sets of OEM sensors - both verified to be working. So i'm about 99% sure it isn't the sensors in the tires.

We had this issue recently on our 08 535xi. It was under warranty, so we took it to the dealer, who diagnosed a failed receiving unit for the corner in question. The tire shop tested all four sensors, and all were sending a signal.

Not yet...I haven't had time to troubleshoot lately. I know for sure it is somehting in the car...it isn't the tire sensors.

I have reset the car with an Autologic system at the BMW shop, and reset it with iDrive many times. No luck. I also pulled the TPMS fuse and it is fine.

well i figured mine out, my aftermarket halos are messing up the tpms signal,

Are the OEM for the 08-09, or OEM for the 2010 and up? They did have a change for 2010. I've seen this issue mess up more than one person in the past.

it is an '08 with '08 MHZ wheel sensors. Wheel sensors are not the issue here. Has to be something on the car side of things.

All of the M3 sensors transmit on the same frequency of 433MHz. But if you've confirmed that they are in fact for the '08-'09, then it is time to start checking the other parts of the system like the receiving units.

I'm still trying to find someone that has an insight on the receiving units? Any idea on how to troubleshoot that?

I'm not a service tech, but I would guess that you will need to hook it up to computerized diagnostics. pbonsalb said his dealer was able to diagnose the issue on his 08 5 series, which used the same sensors. It may take a dealer or at least dealer-level equipment to accurately diagnose that type of fault.
