Sorry to hear this for sure. Use insurance, that is its purpose. And lastly, stop going thru gas station car washes.

I understand that, but this process theoretically still raises the cost of insurance for car owners. It creates a big set of paper pushing and legal processes. The only reason I would go through this if your insurance offers some type of guarantee on the repair work.

The party at fault (and associated policy holders) should be hit on this. Not you and the car insurance policy holders.

The other thing to think about is that your car will have a carfax blemish if you decide to trade in.

I think you could sue them for false advertising on the touchless wash. In all seriousness though, sorry this happened to your car.

As an insurance attorney, I'd tell you to choose the body shop and have them pay the bill. You can tender it to your carrier but they will subrogate it to them and/or more likely their carrier. It's cleaner the first way. Don't sign anything until you have your car done and are happy. Have them also kick you some dough for the annoyance and pay your rental.

If you want less headache go with your insurance. But if you don't want any damage record on your car then go with the car wash insurance. OP it is up to you on what route you want to take.

When I was hunting for my M3 I spent months going through ads and looking at pics. I passed up a lot of cars that had any blemish on Autocheck or anything to suggest bodywork was done.

The car may look perfect when done but if anything shows up on Autocheck, you'll lose a big chunk of buyers. Now if you plan to keep it then that's a whole different story.

I'd lean towards having them privately pay for damage. Make sure you keep pics and documentation. As mentioned above, better for resale/carfax. Also, from my experience with car insurers (even well known ones)... My wife and I put in claims for my X5 and her MB in a span of 6 months because we were unlucky enough to be hit by other silly drivers on the road. Clearly, not our fault... Next thing you know they were dropping us since we were deemed high risk. What??? We were so glad to sign up to another company. But insurance companies will always look after themselves and any dent on your record be it not your fault is still a dent.

yeah seriously. A lot people who live in completely different situations around the country being armchair quarterbacks.

I remember a while back someone was giving people shit for living in an apartment in NYC and owning an M3 vs buying a house with a garage. I think that person was living in SoCal as well....and we were like wtf....entry level condos are easy $1-$3m in NYC, with parking spaces alone over $10k.

for the record, I live in DC metro, in one of those towers. I have no other alternative in the winter time other than using the touchless car washes. When I have to hand wash my car, my ONLY alternative is to take it to a self-service station, spray it down and bring my own buckets/sponges/soap etc while a million people are impatiently waiting in line for me to finish up, that's the life in a major metro area.
