Tires for seattle's rainy winter?

Winter tires don't seem necessary in Seattle. No snow and temps usually above 38F. Its just usually wet roads in winter. Do you however suggest getting a different set of tires than the performance tires that comes with M3 for the rainy winter?

I won't be hitting slopes in an m3.

i wouldnt bother, or dont. i run summer tires all year and have no issues just dont take the m3 when its much below freezing. i have ps2s, ad08s, and nt01s so have a few choice and are listed in order of wet weather performance. lots of performance tires have very good wet traction.

Performance winter tires or bust for me. You can get by with your summers but you might not enjoy the drive as much and you'll increase your risk for loss of control. My PSS are terrible at or below 45F in the wet.

lol then well you obviously haven't seen 1MOREMOD hanging his tail out on the track with DSC off and NT01s in the rain then ... ..

I run NT05s all year around and on the track and will be switching to NT01 for the track soon ..

Depends on "where" you live in the greater Seattle area. The term micro-climates gets used a lot in this area. Where Seattle rarely gets much snow, you can go 25 miles north or east into the foothills and it can change from 40 and a cold rain to 32 and snow...

Because of where I live, I got with a performance winter (Blizzak LM60) from December - mid-March. Then run summers the rest of the year. The summers (PSS) are fine in the rain...as long as it stays above 40. But, I don't want to risk it where I live. If I lived in downtown Seattle, I would be tempted to just use a summer tire year round...but not where I live and commute to.

We have sold quite a bit of PSS lately, but i prefer Continental DWS the most, PSS are one of the best tires though.

dws isnt much of a performance tire at all. i have them on my x5 which is fine but wouldnt think of them for the m3.

This^^. It really isnt that bad in Seattle where you have to change up your tires and such. And how many people actually push their car in the rain anyway?

i do at the track! have lots of wet days there each fall and winter, tnt days.

If you have the luxury of not driving or have an alternate vehicle for the rare bad stuff (snow & ice), Summer tires are okay - I've run both Vred Sessantas and PSSs through the last Winters here in Portland; but there are a few days I parked it and took my SUV with Winter tires on it. Have had a few dicey times getting home from work when the weather changed midday. I did find previously that PS2s will not deal with even 1/4" of snow.

no issues with PSS so far this winter. I live and work on the eastside. Wet grip seems fine, but I don't push it at all when wet out.

I run AD08's are year and do fine. If my car wasn't totally worthless in the winter anyway I would run conti DWS, they're the best all-season performance tire right now.

You poor guys and your delicate winter M3s.
If it's a DD, get some Dunlops or Michelin winter tires and you can drive 9/10ths all year round. Of course if you don't need to drive the car in nasty rain then I wouldn't either, but I do and I have great confidence in my winter setup.

you can never go wrong with Michelin at all. Especially in Seattle.

Yes, and PSSs have much improved wet weather performance over PS2s, which are not bad.

The PSS is one of the best performing UHP summer tires in the wet! But when the temps drop below 40*, they will start to taper off on traction. With that being said... I recommend the new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 PSAS3 if you are looking for the best all-around tire. Here is a quote from the BMW Blog review of it:
These Michelins are not intended as track tires, though you’d have me fooled through an autocross. To call them all-seasons almost seems disingenuous – they are just too good at everything: it seems to defy the category, which normally is mediocre at everything and good at nothing. In short, these are all-seasons that perform like summer performance tires yet can bring you safely home through light snow and slush.

Are PSSs better than PSAS3s in any way? What about summer? How fast they wear off? How I see it, PSAS3 is better in all ways, but more expensive.

If you don't push it in winter and when there is a chance for hydroplaning, PSSs should be just fine, even on wet roads, right?

yes that can be said of most any tire. drive according to conditions. only issue is no driving or storing tires below -15 which is rare around here!

PSSs are touted by Michelin as having very good life. They have a UTOG wear rating of 300.
