![]() ![]() Next BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra to Ride on Beefed Up Toyota 86 Platform? BMW and Toyota recently inked a deal to partner on fuel cell, sports car, and lightweight Technology [more on deal here], which should see synergies in engineering and development. In a report about the Toyota Supra successor, Motor Trend suggests that the agreement will form the backbone to the development of both the new Supra and the next Z4. They speculate that both sports cars will ride on a revised and beefed up version of the Toyota 86 (AKA GT86, FR-S, BRZ) platform. Should this rumor prove true, and with the Toyota 86 receiving much critical acclaim for its handling and being a true driver's car, this will hopefully result in a much more dynamic handling successor Z4 than the current E89 Z4. As for the next Z4's powerplant, MT's source says that BMW is testing a BMW-built V6 hybrid motor which would deliver similar power to the new Supra - speculated to be 400+ HP (from a turbocharged 2.5L inline 4 cylinder hybrid or a mid-mounted 3.5L V6 hybrid). BMW is also said to be helping with the development of the Supra's suspension settings and handling properties. The next Z4 is expected 2015-2016 and the new Supra comes in 2017. |

Very interesting. From what I gather:
- Toyota provided the FRS design to Subaru. - Subaru engineered the chasis and engine. - Now Toyota is taking that chasis and having BMW put their suspension and engine into it. Is Toyota going to then take the Subaru chasis, BMW suspension and have someone else put their engineering into a piece? The end product will be dubbed, The Picaso. |

definitely digging this idea. I just bought an frs and it's a very fun car. I find myself enjoying it a bit more than my e46 m3. If my frs had a bit more power, it would be a perfect car. I programmed with ecutek so I'm about at 220hp right now. 260-300 would be ridiculously awesome.

I was kinda hoping BMW partnered w/ Honda. I think the NSX concept plus BMW enhancements would make for a sick ride. I am sure BMW just wants Toyota's hybrid tech and is feeding them a little fish food to get it. Nonetheless, hope something good comes of it.

I could be way wrong but that's my guess. Regardless thought, if I see a ultra lightweight car produced, I'll be in heaven. |

![]() I like Toyota, i've come from a long line of toyotas in my life, including an IS350 lex, 4runner, tacoma etc. none of them have ever needed repairs beyond scheduled maintenance. I can't say that for the e46/e90 m3's i've owned with FAR less miles. Maybe the true gift is having something with the performance of a bimmer and the reliability of a toyota...which I would really appreciate. |

Anybody know what exactly "midsize" sports car means length wise?
For example, compact sedan is about ~180 in, midsize sedan is ~190 in, fullsize sedan is ~200 in. What about sports cars? My guess is about ~170 in? I'm not 100% sure |
