i have the harbor freight aluminum one and it work well for the track as its light and low. i also have a super old 4 ton craftsman beast that weighs a ton itself that i use in the garage.

I use a craftsman 3 1/2 ton hydraulic jack. My dad gave it to me when I bought my house. Been using it for years with no issues.

I've had my Costco jack for years and it's awesome. Fits under all of our cars save for an extremely slammed E30 cabrio. I use it a lot and has never given me any issues.

I have been using one of those lightweight aluminum HF jacks since 2006. I like it so much I bought a second one a couple of years ago. Has a low saddle height. They go on sale for about $59 regularly. I also have a big 3 ton Michelin steel jack from Sam's Club that has worked great since 2005. It cost about the same.

I do like those low profile jacks, with about 3 inch saddle height. HF sells one also. Had not seen the Costco one before. I think the HF one was $129 recently. I just don't really need another jack.

If you drive up on 2 x 12s, you can make do with a higher saddle height jack, which is probably sturdier and more durable. Steel is stronger than aluminum also.

The $140 one is a larger jack. It is heavier and bigger in every way. It is a bit heavier duty but also less portable.

Like others have mentioned, I've had no problems with my Harbor Freight 2.5 Ton Low Profile Floor Jack:

Did a leakdown test with no load for 24 hours without a problem, and worked just fine for quick lifts.

However, I did spend more time than I would have liked looking for fill valve for the hydraulic fluid (not included with the jack). Turns out there's a plate covering it with 2 screws on each side that need to be removed -- nowhere was this mentioned. Perhaps someone more familiar with jacks would have found this right away.

My only complaint is that the two piece handle is kind of wobbly, but for $70-$80 the jack is well worth this minor flaw.

And I wasn't able to use my 20% coupon, as it is stated in the fine print jacks are excluded from the coupon.

If you do not need portability, the bigger jack is probably best. It should raise the car higher and that can be useful it you want to get it as high as possible on jackstands. You can alternatively put a block of wood on a smaller jack, but that is not as stable. For stock lift point adapters, I bought a set of 4 aluminum ones on ebay for about the cost of one from a BMW specialist shop. I forget the name of the seller.

I got mine on eBay from the seller mazaknexus for a good price and they were shipped quickly. The seller has different listings for quantity and "self-gripping" adapters. The regular ones work just fine for me.

Definitely get the jack pad adapters though, since the circular pad on the jack won't fit into the plastic jack pads under the car.

FYI, that 2.5 ton HF jack is on sale now with coupon code for $79.99. I normally use a 3 ton Sears jack that's been good to me, but it's not low profile enough to fit under my M3. My friends highly recommended this HF jack. Going to bite the bullet and buy it, as I've got a maintenance marathon coming up for the M3.

I wanted the higher lift, since I also have a Jeep to contend with.

I'm very happy with it. It's sturdy. I did a long leak-down test with the car on the jack, and it kept the car hovering over my jackstands for days. (I did bleed the hydraulic cylinder when I got it.) The hydraulic fluid port is easily accessible too. BUT it's heavy as all get out, so you won't be throwing it in the trunk. And it costs about $140.

Also, if you need an emergency jack, their $20 model fits BMW jack points just fine: http://www.harborfreight.com/automot...ack-66907.html
