Rubbing sound from rear diff

I just had my car in for a lot of random shit. One of the things was the loud rear diff rubbing sound when doing slow tight turns. There is a SIB for this issue, but it sounds like purely a noise thing and not a functional issue. My warranty is almost up and I am wondering if I should send the car back in and have the fluid changed per the SIB or if it's not worth the trouble. What do you guys think?

On a side note, I had a very minor squeak in my steering column fixed. When I got the car back I had a very MAJOR squeak in the rear deck. Wtf could they have done back there? Are they messing with me?

I use to get the same rubbing noise in the rear. I always seemed to happen in the morning right after I warm up the car for a minute or so and made a slow left turn out of my garage. Sounded like low tone rub. Almost like tires rubbing but much louder.

I brought it to the dealer just prior to the end of my warranty and they kept it overnight to try to simulate the noise. No luck.

Now its been 2k miles since I was at the dealer and the funny thing is I no longer hear it at all...

Just get the friction modifier fluid for the diff under warranty. I had mine done several thousand miles ago and notice no performance difference on fast road driving or on track. Significantly quieter obviously.

Rear differential clutches binding. I had mine done at 14,500 miles and no more noise.

I had it done too. Only takes 45 minutes or so. Well worth it.

Ditto. At about 10k my car started getting the rear grinding sound on tight right hand turns. The sound progressively got louder so I took it in. The first time they said it had something to do with my brakes. The second time I had to tell the service guy that there was a SB requiring the fluid to be changed. They changed it and the grinding sound was immediately gone and hasnt been back since for 8k now.

Definitely get every last service you can, while under warranty

I would also show them this part # for the diff fluid just to make sure they use the right stuff

Thanks for the info, I specifically called my service advisor at Crevier and told him to use the updated oil per the SIB when they changed the fluid this past week (my car had the updated fluid in it already). My invoice does not have this P/N. You would think BMW would tag the car somehow so the techs know to use the correct fluid going forward.

Yeah they get confused a lot at dealerships..lol

But you should google that part number make sure it says FM Booster on it.

same here

I just purchased an 09 e90 m3 which has 14000mi and its doing this also. I couldnt imagine what I would be like if we didn't have the internet forums to track how these cars are behaving and to allow wise people to do there own little fixes before the buzzards feed off of us. Thank m3post for all of your helpful info.

It is SIB 33 02 11.

They replaced my Final Drive Oil, but I still have the rubbing sound. Slow, tight right turn when the car is cold.

I hate to have to take it back, but it looks as if I will...

Just looked up the SIB, and it applied to the E46. Can't believe they would use the same SIB for an E90.

We'll see Monday.

True..Salisbury style diffs..you will be poping and cluncking a block away..but you when you get on it..you sure will hook up those tires

This is exactly what it does. It seems worse/more likely when cold.

It doesn't bother me, but makes me concerned. If I don't have to worry, I won't worry, but they say they changed the oil, so it makes me question my service...

I wish I had this picture with me when I tried to explain to the dealership parts guy what friction modifier is. I had to use some crap I found at Autozone.

By the way OP, I believe that squeak from the rear deck is due to ice between the rear window and the trunk lid. My car did that something fierce last night.
