I know I'm reviving a super old thread, but why did you sell your gt-r and get back into an m3?? Just curious because I'm thinking about getting a '11 gtr

Older GTRs tend to overheat their transmissions quickly (8-10 laps) and require tranny cooling upgrades, also the tranny has a history of blowing up when under stress (go see how many gtrs have tranny failures over on gtrlife.com) and I was constantly worrying about warranty. Also tires and pads are slightly more expensive, the stock rotors will crack after 2-3 trackdays so you need to upgrade those.. most importantly, the gtr has such high limits that as a low-med intermediate track driver like me, I could never find them.... with my m3, I can get closer to those limits thus making me a better driver. However on the other hand, the gtr is a monster, a sledge hammer.. you will easily do lap times with a gtr that are just not possible with most other cars.. ultimately the gtr is a fantastic car... especially if you do more street than track , or are an exceptional track driver who already has all the skills to master a beast like the gtr and is willing to spend a bit more on track wear and tear items. just make sure you get a good clean gtr and that the warranty in intact..

w00tw00ts experience reminds me of that J.Clarkson DVD "Powered Up" from 2011 where he tested the GTR, the GT2 RS and all the other supercars from that year. And he ended up saying that the BMW 1M was the most fun car to drive.
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzIyNjk3NjIw.html So interestingly, according to JC, if you mess up the weight distribution (like with the GT3) or go from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive (many supercars now have AWD), no extra hp seems to be able to give you back the amount fun you have already lost. You are just paying more for it in terms of maintenance, insurance, fuel, worries etc. I think it is fair to say that if you cannot take your car to the edge, and control its over- and understeer, then its just a "drag car" waiting to get beaten... Because there will always be something faster out there... This of course depends entirely on the driver, and JC is not a race car driver. |

I honestly have never heard of a GTR blowing their stock transmission that wasn't modded or doing back to back hard launches on the car. In fact I have heard of FAR MORE DCT failures. The "problem" with the GTR is that it's extremely easy to make an extra 75HP, and fairly easy to make an extra 200HP. That's what's breaking the trannies... I think the transmission is a non-issue. The consumables definitely is an issue clutch fluid $1100, brakes $2200, tires $2800, and that was in the first 11k miles LOL. Well put the GTR is a sledge hammer, not a great daily driver (I don't daily drive mine), whereas the M3 is drivable daily. Of course the M3 is also a lot slower...

With a few track events yeah... As I recall the front rotors are $800 MSRP each, assuming 30% off backs are less with pads at say $200 you're over $2200. A few aftermarket ones are less as I recall, but I've sold a variety of 2pc rotors and I still prefer OEM...

not really that out of line. OEM BMW rotors run 650 front and 550 rear then set of pagids fron 380 and rear 330. your right at 1900 for oem doing the work yourself. 2800 for tires is that part that makes me cringe. i can get 4 275-35s for just over 1000 bucks.

Tires for GTR are 1600 if you go with the PSS's. 2000+ for OEM.

Keeping this thread on topic: The 09-11 and 12+ GTRs are pretty similar except for the LED bumper. From a powertrain perspective (computer aside) both still use the IHI RH55 turbos, the nozzle area is slightly larger on the 12+ hotside due mainly to cracking and not performance reasons, the tuning (boost) is a bit more aggressive resulting in an extra 60 or so horses. Not certain it's worth the premium to pay for a 12+, so I guess if you're looking for a used one keep that in mind - Good luck!

Having been around the metaphorical internet automotive-world block a few times as a global forum if that thread reached 25 pages with 80% of the guys unmodded that's a concern. 3 pages of guys not wanting to pay for what they broke (it is a $8-12k rebuild to be fair) that doesn't surprise me at all and frankly as a statistical measure to extrapolate the likelihood of a GTR transmissions breaking it is meaningless. I have heard all manner of sob stories from guys putting a rod through the block and trying to save up to buy a new motor. There were cars in shops for MONTHS while the owner saved up trying to pay for a new motor. Kid literally crying to me on the phone. It seems especially here in the states with our easy credit a few GTR owners stretched a bit too much and couldn't pay for broken parts and tried to seek warranty coverage. Certainly this was also the case with the transmission....

I havent had a replacement transmission but I have broke stock tranny parts after a fulls shep stage 3+ build and had to tear the car back down to fix them. (800+whp pushing the car hard on a road course)
that said, i would do it all again in a heartbeat. absolutely love my gtr

Check the weight. They seem to be really heavy from what I remember.
