Liqui Moly 10W60 Oil

So I was looking to do an oil change and I asked an INDY shop for price. They are suggesting to use Liqui Moly 10W60 instead of the Castrol one. They are charging $240 for the job including labour. I am wondering if anyone has ever used this and if you guys have any feedback?

Also before anyone say search, I tried to search for this topic, but didn't find anything lol.

That is top notch oil. It's more expensive than Castrol, and personally I would prefer it and would gladly pay the increased rate.

Very common on E46M3 and E60M5 applications, as well as racing applications. The subject was briefly touched upon in this thread: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...ght=lubro+moly

Why?

I don't see a benefit, but I'm not a lubricant engineer or BMW warranty claims specialist. I do however know that BMW's S54 engines suffered failures in the first two model years of the E46 M3. One of the remedies BMW implemented was to insist on Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W60 oil. (Now apparently known as Castrol Edge Professional 10W60) They still recommend it to this day. Full disclosure: BMW is a partner of Castrol, so I would imagine they wouldn't tell us, even if there was a "better" oil we could use.

However, if you are inside your warranty period, I would definitely stick with the prescribed Castrol, so as not to give BMW an easy excuse to decline any engine related warranty repairs.

Agree..I wouldnt want to "guess" using a different oil..LiquiMoly for top offs would be fine..but I would stick with the Castrol for oil changes

For full disclosure, vendors should also provide full disclosure whether you're a distributor when making a recommendation. We view EAS in the highest respect in terms of reputation as a vendor and mechanics for our cars, but it's just better for all of us to have a disclosure.

that said, I'm not a petro engineer, and I can probably understand an engineering report if provided for both oils for a high revving engine like ours. But I haven't seen a formal report nor comparative that tests both oils in a substanitally similar engine/condition, other than someone saying, "yeah, trust me, it's better..."

that's why I'm sticking to the recommended TWS Motorsports (now TWS Edge Professional). Yes I'm aware BMW has a contract with BP/Castrol regarding this, but we have to at least believe BMW did their engineering due deligience on this. I at least drink the cool-aid on this part.

I've been looking at Liqui Moly. I don't know the price but their website and promotional material say "for BMW M application." It's the No.1 oil in Germany and I am sure it's TUV approved and also meets most OEM specifications. If it's cheap and given I hardly track the car, and change oil every 12 months/6k km, I will be going with LM from my next change.

The only reasons to use it is because it is cheaper and easier to find than Castrol.

It's about $10 a qt compared to Castrol at about $15.

Ebay has both.

If you find an oil that has the same specifications as stated on the Castrol bottle then it should be fine. ie same viscosity range, SAE/Europe designations, and synthetic.

I have been using it in 5W-30 on my other BMWs for DIY oil changes since I read the article in Bava's Fast Times newsletter (http://www.bavauto.com/newsletter/20...ter.pdf#page=1). Will use the 10W60 for DIY changes in my E92 M3 -- there's already some waiting in my garage.

Not sure what to think about BMW brand recommendations. First they're telling me to only use Top Tier gasoline dealers in the U.S. Then they tell me they recommend BP (not Top Tier). There seems to be some play in the joints with this stuff.

Redline also makes 10w60 oil that is a specific formula for M-model cars. Costs slightly more than Lubro Moly but cheaper than Castrol OEM. Quality stuff.

I'm running a mix of Redline 40W race and 5W-30 street. It'll outlast all of you.

Realistically, you can run almost any of the modern synthetics and not worry about your motor. People on this board who are clueless about oil will tell you the world will end if you don't run Castrol 10W-60.

I can see using different brands..but weights?

Why run radically different weights... what are the advantages?

Im not a chemical engineer, I dont know what happens to oil on a molecular level, inside an engine.. so I use the OEM....but there are always folks out there who seem to think they know better than the engineers who built the car..Is it hubris? ..rebel without a cause?

BMW will test with certain oils and make their recommendation based on that. They can't/won't/don't want/ test with everything out there. I'm not saying that everyone should run out and use whatever, but I do agree with Radiation Joe.

Regarding the whole rod bearing thing and BMW switching to 10w60, that was partially because they didn't know WTF was causing them to go boom. Prior to that M3's with S54 engines were recommened Mobile 1. It took BMW a while to admit there was a problem on their end and come up with a solution. I think the 10w60 switchover was just some added insurance -- or they got in a pissing match with Mobile 1 over prices.

I only use Moly oil for my M, Redline to me is a cheap brand. German oil for German which makes the most sense. In terms of oil type, 10w60 is the best and the only oil being used for S65. Sure you can run 4w50 or watever cheap oil, but the life of ur S65 will be shorter than those who use the right one. Moe, I suggest dat you use the Castrol one for now since you are still under warranty, cuz if anything happen to ur motor, Calgary BMW will blame on the Moly oil that you used for your engine.

http://www.etyparts.com/ ETY was selling Liqui moly 10w60 for $38 5L jug, most likely over $40 now since that was 2 years ago. We used it in the e46 m3 and customers cars never a complaint.. also a great race oil that holds up to high temps.

But why would you? For the small difference in price why not just run the factory recommended oil? Seems like there is absolutely no benefit to using some other brand and/or weight other than maybe saving a few bucks.
