Wrapping exhaust in heat wrap ...

Hello,

Has anyone toyed with the idea to wrap an exhaust in heat protective wrapping to reduxe drone/noise? Another benefit would be to reduce back pressure by keeping the exhaust gases hot and flowing faster. Rally cars have used this technique for a while now. I'm sure there are also power benefits how ever minute they may be.

I don't know how wrap would cure or even help with drone..(soundwaves are travelling inside the pipes)

I'd imagine you would have to wrap each section like 200 times before it would actually change the tone or resonance of the pipe.

Wrapping is meant for heatshielding..not to counter drone.

Wrapping is also used for hotter gasses to escape faster - less back pressure.
Sound pressure waves can be muffled, its the same idea as using a suppressor on a rifle. I realize that one or two layers of wrapping is not going to silence the exhaust. I just wanted to know if anyone has tried this. Seems like an inexpensive thing to try. Any idea how much the wrap costs?

Well there is certainly no downside. Go for it.

Not trying to be flip but isn't that exactly what our mufflers already do?

i had a buddy of mine with 350z where the exhaust would rattle on a few places underneither the car. so we wrapped the entire exhaust twice over in exhaust wrap so it couldnt rattle against anything, which worked great. but i dont remember it changing the noise much if at all.

I have wrapped headers and turbo downpipes before, but for performance rather than sound. While it never happened to me, headers are more likely to crack if wrapped.

Several companies make wrap. Check them out at Summit or Jegs. A big roll of quality 2 inch wrap is about $60 as I recall.

Not sure it will help your drone or noise problem, but give it a try if you want. I would buy an exhaust that does not drone.

To the extent there is any performance benefit, it would be from wrapping the headers. After that, it does not much matter.

I would not use wrap to stop rattles and rubs. Wrap disintegrates if it is rubbing. I would fix the exhaust so it does not rattle or rub.

On the M3 GTS 4, exhaust is wrapped after the headers and just past the differential. Wonder if you're running cats, wrapping from the secondary cat-back past differential will help at all in moving gases quicker/more scavenging.
