Great information. Going to have to do this.
Thanks, all. Consider this another vote for a sticky.

I saw this same type of 17 inch alloy on the front of an E92 M3 today, being driven through suburban Melbourne, so it appears this could be an alternative... Last edited by deepblonde; 12-22-2012 at 02:24 PM. |

Maxxis has a 155/70R18 for the same price as the 135. The diameter will be a tad larger but not much and should be closer to spec with the stock rear. I've ordered one and will give it a try on the BMW X5 steel rim from Tisher's.

anyone in NY/NJ area have this spare donut? I would like to test on my e39 M5 to check for clearance/fitment prior to buying one. Would just require slapping your spare from your trunk on my m5 and spinning the wheel ensuring clearance. Should take 1hr tops. I will come to you with my jack, impact gun and torque wrench

anyone out there elsewhere that would be willing to do a test fit? I will find an M5 owner who is willing to test fit yours as the M5 community is interested in potential e39 fitment: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39...18-e70-x5.html |

I did not consider making a spare for my m3. what i instead do is keep a summer rim/tire in the trunk during the winter and visa versa. depending on where I am going I throw in a low pro jack and a breaker bar/ 17mm socket. but at minimal keep the tire/rim with me so that road side could always switch it versus towing me .

The breaker bar with 17mm socket is the ultimate take-along lug wrench, as far as I'm concerned.
My spare is still in my garage because I can't get the jack thing figured out. My floor jack weighs 150# and is five feet long. All the reviews I see on the "portable" floor jacks w/ case indicate they are a POS. I guess I'm going to get an old 5-series jack Y jack from EBay and hope for the best when I actually have to use it. |

I have a 25 lb Harbor Freight aluminum jack that I have been beating on for 6 years. I like it so much I bought another. They go on sale for $59. But lighter and more compact is a used jack from another BMW.
I also throw a summer or winter wheel in the trunk on trips, though I do not leave it there all the time. A compact wheel would take up less space and I might buy one if I ever find a cheap used one. |

So I went to the Harbor Freight page to see which jack you were talking about, and stumbled on a $20 scissor jack
http://www.harborfreight.com/automot...ack-66907.html One of the reviews says it fits the jack pads on an E90. For $20, I'm going to order one and see what's up. The OEM ones go for $80-$100. |

Thanks to Greg for this (and all his extremely clear and helpful posts!) and all the others that added to this. Finally got on with ordering all the bits today and looking forward to having a spare in a few days! Now to solve the jack issue...
One question - there was one mention of needing different bolts. Will the OEM wheel bolts on my car work with this setup or do I need something shorter/different?

Good info but I am confused. I use my car as a DD and would like a spare solution.
2013 ZCP car. What are the part numbers needed to get everything I need? The info on the first post I am not sure if this will fit or is for my car.

I measured the circumference mounted on the steel rim, and it is the same as the new rear Michellin PS2s that came mounted stock on my ZCP. |
