These days car manufacturers are doing everything they can to save weight to increase performance. All types of performance; acceleration, braking, cornering, and fuel economy. Don't forget that the M3's fuel economy is used in the corporate average and there are some regulations/taxes that kick-in if certain numbers are exceeded. In Canada if the fuel economy is >= 13L/100kms then a minimum $1000 tax has to be paid. Fortunately the M3 officially comes in just under that (12.7 I believe) so no additional tax. Yippee! I going to guess that BMW used the CF roofed cars to come up with their fuel economy numbers.

When I fill the car from from empty it's about 16 gallons. So from full to 1/4 tank is 12 gallons. Gas weighs about 6 pounds a gallon. 12 gallons x 6 lbs/gal = ~70 lbs. I don't notice the weight difference from full to a 1/4 tank, in this car. However, I have no doubt that a lighter M3 is faster, more agile, and has better fuel economy.

Has anyone done a 1/4 mile run with a full tank vs an empty tank back to back?

One guy tried but he ran out of gas at the 3/16 of a mile mark.

I agree. I was initially planning to order my alpine white M3 with the moon roof as I thought a white car with a black roof would be too much black and white contrast but then when I saw an alpine white M3 with the CF roof, I thought it looks good so I got my M3 with CF roof instead. Also I don't really care for the moon roof anyway. I don't use the moon roofs on my other cars all that much anyway plus it's just another source of wind noise when driving on highway. Also 1 more thing that may need to be fixed (the seal may get bad, motor that open and close the moon roof may get bad, etc).

I do not believe CF roof's M3 have significantly better handling comparing to the ones with moon roof.

The option to own a car with a CF roof in the entire US car market is so limited I see no logical reason to opt for the sunroof. Beyond weight, aesthetics, etc. this option adds a tremendous amount to making this car more on par with its more exotic counterparts.

As a side note, the last 6 cars I've owned prior to the M have all had sun roofs (including a panoramic on our Q7), and I think collectively I've opened them less than 20 times.

Carbon is King!! :-)

Never understood the allure of a moonroof. My previous car had one standard.

-- On sunny days, I have to slid the cover over it to avoid having my scalp burned
-- On windy days I can't open it because just the sound gives me a headache
-- It's useless on cold winter days
-- Can't open it on hot days since I will use the A/C to cool down
-- If you forget to close the roof, some assh*le will probably throw a cigarette inside (happened to two people I know)

Therefore out of 365 days, there'll probably be 10 ideal days for its use. Yay! So much for practicality.

Like someone mentioned earlier, the CF is lighter, lowers the CG, costs $$ (which u get for free), and looks damn cool! Its one of the things that sets the car apart. Moonroof...pssst

Never really used the moon/sun roof when I've had them. I'd prefer a full on vert.

So, I prefer the carbon fiber roof.

Acceleration varies as per the cube root of the power to weight delta, so assuming the average non-moonroof car goes out the door at around 3600 pounds, a 45 pound weight penalty is 1.25%, the cube root of which is .41%.

So, over say, a quarter mile, the carbon fiber car will gain close to a half MPH, and drop around a half-tenth in ET, or around half a car length.

The half-tenth ET gain is suspect because the moonroof car will perhaps get a slightly better launch due to a weight transfer advantage.

On track, the acceleration advantages will occur on every straight.

I don't know how to quantify weight-transfer disadvantages in cornering.

I like the CF roof but not for any performance advantage reason. Simply, I think it looks more interesting. However, with today's new ways to change the look of the paint, I probably will take a sun/moonroof again and have the entire roof wrapped in the color texture I want.

that is the least of our worries. i have new 3 series in the drive and its a turd. not sure how they are gonna polish it.

CF roof looks cool on lighter colored cars, the contrast rocks, but got to say I use the moonroof a lot and expect to have one in a car I use daily.

An M3 CF roof is on my to-do-list. 45lbs weight reduction at the highest point of the car will clearly be felt on the track.

Something to think about:

The discussion in this thread is interesting. Especially when doing a parallel with the new M3/M4 threads where it is all about how the new F8X M3/M4 will be lighter by about 200-300lb. The big argument on the F8X M3/M4 is about how much better it will perform despite it having the same power output as the E9X because of its lighter weight.

The moonroof is 45lb more compared to the CF roof. That is 15-25% of the weight saving the F8X will get over the E9X...

I don't see how they are going to shed 200-300 lb on a slightly larger car. Wishful thinking IMHO.

My point was not about if the F8X will be lighter or not or by how much.

It was about the contradiction. In one thread 200lb make the world of difference on how the new M will perform. And in this thread, where 45lb does not make a difference at all .

You should read some of the auto news articles on the amount of light weight metals that are being used in car construction these days. For one the new Porsche Boxster. Amazing amount of aluminium and magnesium. Also, the manufacturers are glueing (not wleding) many of these different metals pieces together. I'm not surprised to see those numbers being discussed. Bigger, lighter, more power = better performance.

I can see small improvements like what we saw on the boxter, but that still a far cry from the rumors for the M4. But hey, I'd be glad to be proven wrong on this one, time will tell
