I had my M3 for 70000km and the spark plugs weren't changed at all until I sold the car.

+1, lots of misinformation here about CBS and plugs.
Such as?
Such as, plugs aren't consumption based, mileage determines replacement.

the key reader at the dealer; if it gets past due, it will pull up in your cluster/iDrive also.

I got a story from my SA that they didn't care what the manual said - they care what the car calls for. Kind of odd but get a load of this. My 08 was going out of warranty and the SA said the car was calling for a plug channge at 29K miles (@ 4 years) so I said sure. Bill would have been close to $500 if the dealer had done it off warranty. So, there does seem to be some sort of CBS that allows the car to call for specifc service issues (more than just oil changes) - or else my dealer was just looking to keep me on as a customer after the warranty.

Not from BMW's perspective, that was the whole point of my posts. The manual states one thing but BMW treats it as "CBS" based on when the car calls for it. Mine were replaced at 28k, not 37.

mine was replaced per CBS.... it said it is now due when it was 28k... not 37...

although i added 40k miles after that before replacing with new Sparkplug this past weekend. Spark plug looks ok all were in great shape.. but then again after replacing it with new plugs it was night and day difference. maybe its because i replaced it after 40k.. i dont know..

I suggest replacing it every 30k just to make sure.

Agree with that. I did mine again a couple weeks ago (~52k miles) and the car is noticeably smoother.

I guess I replaced mine well before this could have triggered. Hmmm, interesting, thanks for the info.

Mine were replaced at 67k km (42k miles). I was getting a repeat CEL and it was diagnosed as misfires. The car was just off warranty by about one month. The dealer spoke with BMW Canada and they covered 70% of the cost (which included replacing the plugs) as a "good will". My SA also cited that the plug replacement was called by CBS and that the manual was incorrect. The CBS never showed that the plugs needed replacing though. They replaced them as part of the troubleshooting for the misfire.

The car was better with the new plugs. I had the software updated under warranty a few weeks before, so the software and plug combination made a good difference. The car really felt as if it was pulling more, more responsive too.

I just got a quote for $581 for this job. I think I am gonna try to use the DIY to do it myself. Where is the best/cheapest place to buy these?

Have you actually seen this? If this is the case then why would BMW explicitly state in the manual that plugs will not display on CBS?
