What do you mean "become like the 8 series"? Collectible? The 8 series cars are not really highly prized based on transaction prices. Ridiculously overcomplicated and obsolete? Pick any modern BMW really. So expensive to repair that it is not worth running? See previous answer.
I think I know what you're getting at but you used a stupid example. Regardless, the 1M coupe is the answer to your question. |

I think the easy answer is the 6 series because it's essentially the same kind of car, BUT fewer 8's were sold though and that makes it a more special car. The 6 is a rung down in terms of special-ness I'd say though I'd love to have one (650i 6-speed).
BMW needs to reinvent the 8 perhaps. They were the finest expression of the E34/E32/E36 era styling and still look great. The 850csi is near the top of my list in terms of ultimate awesome BMW's.

There are no future collectible any more. The next generation of drivers can care less. Once we who do care die off, the classic car will just be an obsolete car. Just like software.

Would "like the 2002" have been a better choice? I thought about that but the 2002 is really iconic and I'm not sure that could ever be duplicated by BMW. Sorry that I appeared to have annoyed you. I was just making small talk on a message board. It's always been hard for me to meet people and make new friends. Last edited by mryakanisachoad; 01-22-2013 at 01:16 PM. |

Holy cow this is an example of some pretty radical existential nihilism. I think the automobile still represents a powerful form of sentimentality with most western cultues and in particular, American culture.

Yup, and they are just used cars at the end of the day.

To keep on point with the topic...
I honestly think the e39 will be a much sought after older car. The M5 in particular.

6 series most likely.
On that note, I think the the old 8 series looked much cooler than the current 6 series BMWs, though. The current 6 (and especially the last) just look so odd to me. Ick. If I had that much money to spend, I'd not get a 6 series because I don't think it will ever be sought after. And don't you know those will be such a money pit when they're older.

the 6 series in concept could've been a unique and niche BMW... too bad the previous gen is too hideous looking, so the only niche is the owners who bought ugly on wheels. The new current gen 6er is way more clean, classic and stylish, but also have become too "mainstream" to be considered unique. the previous gen 6er is a complete design fail and can never be what the 8 was when it launched.

Lol @ like the 8 series one day. What do you mean? Rare? They are rare but also inexpensive. I almost bought an 840i a few weeks back. Clean title, 140k miles. He wanted $8000. I offered $6500. He did not want to go lower than $7500. So the deal never went through.

2001-02 M Coupe, Z8, and 1M. All three models are holding their value remarkably well.

This. Except for possibly the Z8 which seems to be having some issues with the aluminum frame failing, both the butchered Dinan ones and even the stock ones. I sold my S52 M Coupe, but if it had been a more pampered S54, I'd likely still have it. Nothing BMW has made since then has appealed to me nearly as much, including the E86, which probably has moderate collectible value too, but not as much as the E36/8. |

If you mean what car is the logical successor to the 8er?
Then it has to be the 6er in terms of large coupe concept. If you are thinking of large , luxurious and V12 powered then it is the upcoming Rolls-Royce WRAITH which will be the BMW group's most powerful coupe model to date.

Collector? Flipper? Sentimentality? Project/Hobby car? The 8 is an intriguing car to me. If you see one parked in a lot, it gets tons of attention. More than almost any other car I can think of. Especially if it's red. You'd have to light it on fire to get less attention. But, nobody ever seems to really love it or even really like it. And, I wonder why. It's only anecdotal but I experience a similar phenomenon with the 135i. Not sure what the correct word or phrasing is but the 1 series piques the curiosity of people much more than an M5. I think people get confused by the 1. They like it but they don't love it. But, they sort of love it. And, I wonder why. . . . . Last edited by mryakanisachoad; 01-24-2013 at 02:05 AM. |
