Software update?
Just came from the dealer for my oil change ($230 which isn't bad as I've seen some of you pay $300 or better). I have an 08 E90 M3 22,000 miles (completely stock). Dealer told me Im due for spark plugs $579, rear diff $263, and software update $270. He said its the time not the mileage. Diff fluid ok but plugs? Seems a little soon no? Finally the software update. A quick search showed how someone gained 20 hp from the update. You fellas think its worth the $270 or should i just go with a Dinan software update for like $700.

I got the software done for free, and it's worth it for me of course. Car feels smoother but I doubt you'll notice an increase in horsepower. As you slow down, the gears change much more smoothly than before the update. Also, I feel much quicker throttle response.
If the car has never been updated before, then definitely update it. Mine was updated in 2010 and the latest update which came out around Christmas I think did change the feel of the car. |

There shouldn't be a "need" to update any software, it's not normal maintenance unless you have an issue related to a fix provided by the release. Also at 22k, you seem premature to do plugs and rear diff fluids. Plugs and diff oil don't go "bad" like milk in a warm fridge, or like brake fluid that absorbs water reducing its boiling temp.

$270 is how many hours of labor?
Seems kind of steep. .

Spark plug change varies by mileage, I got mine changed under my maintenance plan at 22k

I was quoted $95 from an independent shop to update the software. Dealer wanted $215. I figure, I have an 08 as well and it has never been done so figure it is a good idea.

If you elect to do plugs (mine were done at 28k, 37k is the max called for in the manual), buy the plugs yourself and have them do the labor. I just did that and the labor was $125 (1.5 hrs at $85/hour) and I paid ~$80 for the plugs on Amazon. ~$200 all in. $579 is outrageous even if you did buy the plugs from the dealer.

Depending on what software you're on, you could very well benefit from a software update. In regards to a tune, yes we do give our customers the newest software when they purchase a tune from us. It just depends on if you're looking for performance or to keep the vehicle stock.

In the East Bay, we have Performance Technic, but I'm sure that most places have a shop like this-quality at least on par with the dealer, prices less than half. |

Software updates are independent of transmission type.

I'd pay the $230 @ the dealer before I'd let Jiffy Lube touch my car. It's simple to DIY.

I recenlty upgraded from whatever it was that my car had (presumably 80E or something similar as it's an '08 and had never been updated) to 240E - it was a bit of a pain, as I then had to reload an updated tune as well . . .
Certainly not a game changer - if there is any differences, it's that the engine feels smoother between the gears. Nothing empircal to add here; the observation may be 100% psychosomatic.
