Hi guys
Finally a thread where I can start to make head and tail of this thing. So I have purchased a E92 M3 (UK) in Sept 2012 and today using a cable and INPA have found out that it is running firmware: E89X-11-03-510 Can anyone confirm what Engine Firmware that will include? Thanks |

Probably 190E.

Wow - this is a long thread. I'm not going to dig through it in its entirety, but I'm still trying to make sense of all of this the same.
Specifically, I had my car tuned with ESS stage 2 ~6 months ago. I have an '08 M3 - during the time of tuning, no one mentioned anything to me about a potential ECU update. I have to admit, I'm a bit annoyed that this detail was overlooked / not brought to my attention. I suppose that I will now have to call the dealer and figure out what ECU version I'm running. Given that the car is an '08, it has the potential to old (and I don't recall BMW ever updating it [or at least letting me know that they had] during its check-ups). If pre 190E, I will have to flash back to OEM, and then re-flash with the ESS tune? Gah, not fun. Tom@EAS - how much would you guys charge for something like this? I'm in LA . . .

If you still have the ESS tune loaded, they will have to update the base file, and provide you with a new 240E-specific tune. For those with E-Flash, this can be performed by the end user.

Question: just back from the dealer. This is the information that they provided: 1. Integration plant: E89X-08-03-520 2. I-Level HO: [blank] 3. New integration level available: Yes Any idea as to what I have? Worth upgrading? P.S. BMW quoted me $320 to flash the ECU. Wow . . .

My ECU has been updated to 240E, and my ESS tune has been updated as well to reflect the new ECU.
During this process, I have learned a number of things. Namely, for those of you out there with the ESS flash cable or equivalent, there is no reason that you shouldn't be doing this yourself. The software is extremely easy to use, and ESS is very, very helpful in terms of providing updated tunes to match the appropriate ECU. Additionally, and I wish that I knew this beforehand, but ESS will also provide you (as far as I understand) with the new ECU as well. There is nothing particularly complicated going on here: 1. Install the software to laptop 2. Attach laptop to the car via USB cable 3. Download current version of car configuration to laptop 4. Email current version to ESS 5. ESS will return tune.mod, and if necessary, the new ECU as well 6. Install one or both 7. Drive away and be merry I've been told before that the car battery must be attached to an external power supply to maintain constant voltage during the tune - this appears to be complete B.S. and a ploy to keep you in the shops. Who knows, I could be wrong - but I updated ECU and Tune without an external power supply and everything went smoothly. In any event, those of you out there with ESS e-flash or equivalent really shouldn't be going to external sources for this. PM me with any basic related questions.

Here's a overview of the ESS E-Flash software process, which should explain the procedures: All steps and an ongoing FAQ on the ESS E-Flash can be seen here: ESS E-Flash ECU Performance Software Cable Overview http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=769500 The 240E update can be easily applied with your existing E-Flash cable in minutes at home. Once the base version is loaded up, load up your 240-specific tune and you're ready to go. ![]()

I rarely have customers send me their stock calibration (because I have them all already). This negates the need for the 36 minute read of the stock file. This way it takes 5 minutes for the update, and five minutes to flash the tune. Add 5 minutes for laptop boot up, plugging in the cable, and starting the application. So ~15 minutes and the car is updated, tuned, and ready for a beating!

This is one of those rare instances in which I wished I lived in CA -- so I could get the stock calibration update easily and at a reasonable price. The dealers in NH are not mod friendly and there are no independent BMW shops specializing in late model cars.

I took my E92 in for an oil change, and listed a couple issues I have been experiencing. I've gotten the call saying that software was left to update overnight (had last been done in 2010.) I'm hoping to see a difference in the performance of the car

I seem to recall a chart somewhere on the forum that cross-referenced the integration level to the version number, does anyone know where that is? I searched but haven't located it yet. I just checked my integration level at my local dealer, and I have a pretty old version on my 5/2008 build E93, E89X-08-03-520. I do plan on getting a tune in the future, and I'm curious to know if just the version update alone will net gains similar to the OP. Any thoughts?

I updated from 170E to 240E (Euro Spec, as I am in Germany) yesterday and the car runs much better.
Power delivery is much smoother, shiftability is much better. It's just nice.. ![]() And I tested acceleration using a vbox and 100-200 km/h improved from 10,6s to 10,3s and my 60-130 mph time is now 12s dead. Vehicle is fully stock. |
