Interest in BMW race school at TWS?

No need to have a race prepped car. DE prep will work. Lots of classroom and on track exercises. Completing the school doesn't entitle you to a BMW CCA race license but it is a prerequisite to get one.

It is a great school to go thru even if you don't intend to race (but you might change your mind afterward).

Would like to do it in the first quarter of 2013. I need about 15-20 students, prefer mostly BMWs but I won't turn people away. Need to be an advanced solo student or an instructor. Instructors will NOT be in the car with you, but they will be on track with you. There is not enough free time to do the race school and instruct. Cost is usually $50-100 more than a regular DE...so at PDS probably $350-400. I promise you won't look at a DE the same again.

Feb 9-10 or May 4-5?

I'd love to have all drivers but I will be chd long resumes. You need to be an advanced student or instructor. You need to be comfortable with the car control at speed with nobody around as we will put car inches off your doors and bumpers. This is not the time to learn how to drive the track.

I wish I could do it, but I will already be in Houston on the 2nd of February with Houston M Club event. Keep me in mind for the next event.

This is for a racing school. You need to be an advanced level solo driver.

At your first event, take a ride with an instructor. When you get the near that level them you are ready for a race school.

I just got back from the school. Bruce and his team put on a great school. If you're trying to decide what you want to do next in terms of tracking, you definitely need to attend a BMW CCA Racing School.

The students in our class had a varying degree of experience from DE instructors to Lemons drivers to guys like me that were pretty limited to solo DE's. I think as long as you have car control, good situational awareness, can follow instructions, and don't try to win race school, you'll do fine in the school.

We did some very interesting exercises that build on each other and get you prepared should you decide to take the plunge into racing.

The first exercise was to drive the track 3 abreast. It's amazing how much track is out there and how much grip it has in places you've never been. The next exercise we did was to leapfrog, which taught you how to grab the inside turn for late passes. The final exercise of the first day was to pass anywhere, no pointby required. We all played nicely, though I did lose track of Peter into turn 1 and caused him to have to go off track. Sorry man.

We got rained out for the first session of the second day, and only got one lap in for the second session due to a bad off between turn 7 and 8.

We had another open session for the 3rd session.

The final exercise was practice starts. We'd line up 2 abreast starting at Turn 9-10. A pace car brought us to the front straight, and once the green flag waved, it was on. If you were in the middle to front, you could usually leap frog several cars. Turn 1 was typically 2-4 cars abreast as we'd jockey for position all the way to turn 5, where we'd pair back up and repeat. We were able to rotate positions so you got to start from front, middle, back and from inside and outside.

The class room instruction was extremely informative and several of the "graduates" are planning to race in April and later at COTA.

Sadly, I found out the CF roof I put on a few months ago would put me in super modified, so if I decide to build up my car for BMW club racing, I'll probably go with blank roof when I have it off for the cage rebuild. Otherwise, I'll try to sell to another DE junky and try to build an IP E36. That's at least a year off.

Anyways, it was a great experience and I am so glad I did it. DE's will never be the same, though I still have a lot to learn as a driver.

I just got home. Wore out. Quick turn around as I have to unpack and repackage and leave Thursday for another Bimmerworld BMW CCA club racing school and a race at Road Atlanta.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I definitely have a ways to go in the HPDE world before I could qualify, but more importantly I'd need to get a dedicated inexpensive track car to do this. At the moment my regular insurance covers me for HPDEs, but they specifically exclude racing events or practice for said racing events (unlike most carriers nowadays that exclude any driving on a racetrack for any reason) -- and I figure even dedicated track insurance vendors don't offer insurance for this, correct? So many expensive hobbies!

Amica Mutual. I've already written a few posts about how awesome they are, so here's a copy/paste of one of them:

Take a look at Amica. I'd never heard of them, but they've ranked #1 in customer service on JD Power for the last ~12 years (behind USAA and one other one that wasn't available to the public either), so I asked them for a quote. Not only did they happen to give me the best rate out of 9 other places I contacted, but they proved their customer service reputation when they pursued a shady at-fault party for 7 MONTHS to get me my deductible back (which was actually greater than what they paid on that claim!!). They also cover HPDEs, unlike many other policies these days. They're there when you need them rather than just giving you a low rate to lure you in and then being a pain when you have a claim. I just signed up for renter's insurance with them as well, and I can honestly say that every time I talk with them on the phone it's a pleasure dealing with them. How often can YOU say that about your insurance carrier?

Before adding renter's insurance, I was paying about $80/month for my M3: 26, male, married, no history, defensive driving discount, multi-car discount, always carried high liability limits (100/300/100 before, now 250/500/200), $1K deductible, living in Austin. Haven't checked the new rate after adding renter's.

+1 for Amica. Great to work with on a claim (house in my case). I didn't know they covered hdpe. I saw the language but it's legally vague. Did you get confirmation directly from them?
