Which model 1911 Pistol?
Just bought a S&W 686 Deluxe (.357 Mag 7 shot revolver) and looking for a semi auto pistol.
The Sig 1911's look amazing and are reasonable priced. Seem some Taurus bashing and bad reviews of Kimbler's. I'm sure S&W and Remington make good 1911's, but don't know anything about them. The Para's are priced well also. Anyone have any FIRST HAND experience with any other 1911's? Thanks B |

Springfield Armory (SA) makes EXCELLENT 1911s. Colt makes great 1911s as well.
Most off-the-rack 1911s made by either Colt or SA cost anywhere from $800-1,200. Here is one of mine (a Springfield Armory TRP). This is a semi-custom gun. ![]() Also, if you want a custom 1911, you could take a look at an Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, Les Baer, or Nighthawk Custom, to name a few. Here is my Ed Brown Kobra. ![]()

Gotta Love It!!

I have experience with Sig Scorpion 1911 and NHC Predator. Both shoot great but the NHC feels more like a fine tuned machine.
My Sig had some fail to feed issues, but after a 15 min phone call to Sig they emailed me a shipping label and i had the repaired pistol back in 7 business days. I haven't shot it since but it came back with a note from the gunsmith who worked on it, stating what he found as the problem and what he did to rectify it. It also said that he fired 200 rounds thought it without a FTF, which i was unable to do. The NHC hasn't had the slightest hiccup from the first round, it's been flawless. But i'm very happy with SIG's customer service and warranty

Sig and Kimber are both good choices too. Should've mentioned those initially. Sigs aren't what I would consider traditional but that's something that doesn't rile me up anyway.

That Kobra looks great. What do you mean Sig's aren't what you consider "traditional"? Because they're not American made? Here's the Sig I'm looking at: http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl...92&tx=87&ty=45 The only bad part of the gun is that its only a 6+1. Asthetically though, its suites my tastes. |

The large external extractor on the Sig is "non-traditional." (See the pic below.) Also, the shape on the Sig 1911s is different enough that the 1911 holsters made by Raven Concealment (kydex holsters) are not compatible with Sig 1911s.

I have 3 S&W 1911s. I have to say that I absolutely love them. I also have a Ruger that I recently got. For the money, the Ruger isn't bad at all. All of my S&Ws are very accurate. But I'm a huge S&W fan. My first 1911 was a Colt, worst gun I've ever had. I had to send it back multiple times. If you want something unique, get a Coonan. At the NRA show, I was messing with a Coonan and that was very nice.

I have a Sig Stainless that I got for <$1000 and no issues so far. Runs like a champ. Sig is a good way to go if you are looking mid budget ($900-1000). Over $1100 you can get a "better" gun from colt or a few others, under $800 I would probably stick with a Ruger personally.
I love the look of 1911 so I got one but after operating it, it shoots amazing but lacks some of the experience for me personally.

I agree with Hawkeye...for under a grand, i would go with the Ruger. I personally dont like any design that strays from the series 70 model, like external extractor on the Sigs or the Schwarz fps on the Kimber IIs.
For between 1000-1500, I would go with the higher end Springfields, STI, or the cheapest Baer. Dan Wesson was a good value until it became overpriced. For over $1500, any of the semi-custom 1911s, Baer, Brown, Wilson, Nighthawk, etc. here's the obligatory gun porn pic ![]() ![]()

There are a lot of brands and differing opinions about 1911's. The feel of a 1911, regardless of brand, is excellent, as the weight nicely offsets the power of a 45 bullet.
From personal owner experience, I suggest a Springfield Armory piece. For about $900-1200, the SA guns offer great features and excellent build quality. Their "Loaded" model was my first 1911 purchase. Besides SA, you can never go wrong with a Colt. From the manufacturer that practically invented the gun, Colt's are always highly sought-after and hold their value very well. From their ~$1000 Defender model on up, a Colt is a perfect choice. If you really want to get crazy, Wilson Combat makes probably the best (and most expensive) custom 1911's, ranging from about $2800 on up. While I don't have a Wilson, nearly as good is my Ed Brown Special Forces - amazing gun, but quite an amazing price too, about $2500! |

I would say go with a bare-bones but solid base. You KNOW you're going to be modding that 1911 and stuff gets expensive. Even if you manage to start out with a $5k gun, people STILL find a way to customize it even more.
Most of the guns already mentioned should be solid.

I am interested in a colt 1070xpe (legal in ca, I think it's the only 70 that is). I found an Ed brown in a local store (blue, ss is not available in ca, I prefer ss) I had money in my pocket, but it just didn't feel 3 times as good as my Kimber. If it was ss it would have been a harder decision.
