New 2009/LCI iDrive controller installation...

hey guys, I'm at the point where I need to take my console apart. Any tips on what I need to do to pop it out with minimum effort or scratches?

I noticed you did the shift boot first. What did you use? A flathead with a soft cloth on the end to cushion the prying motion?

I'm also curious about the F10 controller working in an LCI E9X...

I was in a F10 535i Loaner car on 8/9/12 and the "knob action" on the controller felt so much better quality than the controller in my 2011.5 E90 M3.

I wonder if it is the same with regard to talking to the car?

It looks like, the best way is to remove the console via the shift knob section first?

My question after untugging the shift boot leather, do I just pull the console up, or is there a plastic tab I need to push in?

I have a 04/08 build date, so I assume I've received the updated software. The controller I'm using is 65829231116. According to past posts, the majority of folks who has success in this has at least a 03/08 build date (or has updated software) and has controller -309, which explains why Tischer shows -048 on the order sheet and customers received -309 or other updated part numbers.

RealOEM shows this as the part update for the CIC controller:

Yes, use a thin soft cloth and a flathead screwdiver. Start prying up by the e brake and work your way down. Once you're able to lift it up some you'll see some connectors you need to disconnect to take the console completely off.

I was able to do this successfully. All functions work. To confirm, I have controller 116 and I have an 04/08 build. My car, to my knowledge, never had a software update.

IMO, the CIC controllers are above and beyond easier to use than the old CCC knob. There's less feedback on each click/turn of the knob, so you can actually work faster. The CCC software was already slow, but I realized the high tension feedback of the CCC knob also contributed to the clunkiness/slowness of the system. With the CIC knob, you won't "over scroll" your options, and even if you do, it's a smoother and quick scroll back.

I also gained more shortcut functions. Aside fromt he extra shortcut buttons on the controller, I use to have my * button on the wheel access my phonebook. Now with the Tel shortcut on the controller, my * button is now my shortcut for air vents.

IMO, BMW should have provided CIC controller (be it with old CCC or CIC software) from the start. This improves idrive function by a lot (if you use the idrive alot). The alternative is to learn the voice commands.

I purchased a trim removal kit online and becuase of this, the job was a snap. Something like

I've used the toolos to do several other upgrades such as adding the Euro foglight switch. This was as easy as could be and most importantly doesn't damage the trim. Terrible feeling to get the new parts in only to have damaged the trim.

i was looking at that trim removal set before embarking on my controller swap. IMO, you would not need this kit for the center console removal b/c the console itself is a very large piece and it easily pops out, assuming the user pops open the shift boot as the first step.


That trim removal kit would make life easier if you're doing that Euro fog switch. I didn't have it, and it was a major PITA to remove the trim on the dash with a flathead/soft cloth method. Most of the time, I was using my fingers and hands to gentely pry that piece off.

I am going in to get an engine software update (240E). I have already done this swap with no issues on my April 08 build car. Should I swap in the old CCC controller before the update? Or is engine software update irrelevant?

CIC controller install with cause an issue with the update. Your best bet is to swap it back before going in for the update. This is not from my personal experience but many have stated the incorrect controller part number causes an issue so take that for what it's worth

new knob feels good, less feedback, less over-scrolling, correct? That's what I love about the CIC knob...I really could care less about the rest of the CIC i-drive features.

Misinformation. Just went 70E to 240E with controller installed. No issues. 3/2008 build.

I am sure that's not through the dealer. I tried this back in 2009 and tried dealer integration and didn't work. Someone like Mike Benvo can do the integration without removing the controller.

My response was to AussieM3's statement that an update couldn't be performed with the controller installed. I stated that the update could be updated with the controller installed, as a fact, having firsthand experience, where AussieM3 states he has no firsthand experience. The misinformation is not about who could do it, but whether it could be done or not. Dealerships were never mentioned until now.

All you had to do was ask for more information instead getting amped up over a forum post.

You are correct, this was done through a local coder. Just wanted to state that the update could be done! Looking at my post, "misinformation" sounded harsh.

So, to clarify. 70E to 240E with CIC Controller retrofit installed was successful through a non-dealer coder, such as Benvo.
