Dash rattle
Hi All,
My M3 developed a rattle behind the sat nav. At least that's where I can pin point at this stage. Anyone experience this before and the fix what dealers offer?. Bit nervous about dealer fulling the dash board out. Cheers, |

Hey mate.
I have the same. It's behind the sat nav, I actually think its the hard plastic cover over the speaker. I spoke to bmw Melbourne about it, as usual they said they test drove the car and couldn't find it. Typical! I'll be going for the test drive next time as its getting really annoying, especially when the car is cold with rough idle. Good luck with your rattle!

///M cars are full of rattles, squeaks, and strange drivetrain noises if you come from a regular BMW or any other brand. There is so much going in an ///M car you will not know where to start. Get use to it. Enjoy the car.

Lol!
I have raced cars for many years now. One thing that I have found in both off road and circuit racing is that just because the car is quick, doesn't mean that the interior needs to rattle. We are not talking bout the rough cold start mechanical noises or the clutch plate rattles. It's the plastic interior rattles in a $150k+ car that are disappointing. Should not be any different to a 335i as the interior is almost identical. Just disappointing for such an awesome car to drive as a daily driver. At the end of the day the m3 is not track specific vehicle, it's a well rounded daily driver that is supposed to do everything well, that includes not have interior rattles. Hopefully at my next service bmw Melbourne can address this.

NEVER have service pull the Dash. You want rattles, you will have plenty after that!
Just do a search for rattles after having the dealer pull the dash.

Having pulled the dash and nav screen apart on a few occasions now there are a few areas I have seen that can cause problems.
The center speaker bolts can become loose , the screen wire harness are the likely culprits. Very simple and safe to fix with the right trim removal tool which only costs a few dollars. Just say if you need more info and you are happy to do this yourself. (I have some DIY dash /screen removal PDFs) You can buy the tool from many specialty tools shops. That and some painters tape is all you need What members say about taking to a dealership is spot on. Recently had an annoying rattle in the centre console which the dealer tried to fix then said that the whole centre console needed to be removed to find the rattle. By simply unclipping the handbrake gaiter I found the rattle in a few seconds.Makes sense if you think beyond an hourly rate |

Thanks for the insight Dave.
Thats my big worry. The dealer will just create more rattles. It would be awesome if you could share your PDF of instructions with us. ![]()

In my case it was a 10 mm bolt that holds the dash onto a mental pipe which goes behind the dash. to see it take your screen out and look deep back in the centre its the bolt and metal making the noise

What I noticed during the CIC retrofit is the two nuts that hold the center AC vent can come loose. As Dave said, if you remove the carbon trim and tighten the two bolts it might fix, if the two are the culprits. I've had the car for five years now, and apart from that, and that too being my fault, no other rattles ... touch wood!! Hope this helps.
