DCT jerking?

Hey guys,

Anyone had this issue on their DCT? I have a new 2011 E90/DCT; when I'm stopped at a light in automatic mode, the car sometimes jerks slightly; I feel like its the transmission changing gears and it feels like it wants to move forward; it doesn't actually move at all since I have the brake down; anyone else experience this at all? (tranny is in D2 at the time)

Thanks

Normal. It surges a little bit when you are coming to a stop.

When you're in stop and go traffic, the car is switching between 1st gear and neutral. To prevent the car from stalling, the clutch is lifted from 1st when you apply the brake to stop. It does jerk slightly. Deep down, the DCT is still manual transmission.

Normal, do nothing about it. DCT is clunky at times.

When coming to a stop, there is usually a jerk when the car shifts down into 2nd on its own. Do other people experience this?

All the time. I realized if I feather the brake nicely it won't jerk and come to a smooth stop. But slowing down, turning, then reaccelerating jerks like crazy. DCT likes to think a little too much.

I think it happens a little less in D mode. Shifting down to 2nd on your own can help too.

But whenever it does jerk into 2nd, it's usually unexpected.

I had an M3 which did what the OP posted. Now my M5 does the same. Are these bad boys using the same identical tranny?

No.
As you know, if you're driving in the D modes, you can select 5 levels of shifting, each level selected on the console rocker switch. You might want to try various levels of shifting via that rocker switch and see if they have an affect on your symptoms. In level one D mode(the first vertical bar showing), for example, when the car comes to a stop, the transmission stops and remains in second gear not first gear. Does that level affect the jerking you encounter?

Don't use D mode much but would be in either D3 or D4.

Not interested in using any lower modes, but the jerk I'm referring to is when the car shifts down into 2nd on its own when rolling to a stop. Not when accelerating from a stop.

When I'm in D mode, foot off the gas, no brakes applied, and allowing the car to come to a rolling stop, then, yes, I feel the car downshift through all the gears from 7th to 2nd. But all the downshifts are barely noticeable.
It sounds as if you have a problem that needs dealer attention.
In my previous post, I wasn't suggesting you find another transmission mode and just keep driving. Rather (and I probably didn't do a good job of it), just test the cars response to the various transmission modes that are available to you. In that way, you may find the problem is only occurring in one or two modes rather than across all transmission settings. A little test like this could help the SA address the problem.
