Test pipes (primary cat delete): big HP gain and 0 smell if you keep the rest the stock midsection intact = happy driver and happy wife/kids.

So in answer to the original question of "mods that would give me better HP/TQ for the same money":

_Intake
_Pullies
_Test pipes
_Tune

You can do all that for WELL under 3500. I got all Macht Schnell stuff. Soon to get a tune and I couldn't be happier already
Where are the dynos showing that removal of both the primary and secondary cats is pointless and a waste of money because no power is gained over removing just the primary cats?
I think he's saying that the HP gain is from removing the primary cats and that the secondaries don't offer much (if any) gain when removed.

I do disagree with what he said about the smell however. If you remove the primaries it does smell more, no way around that. Stock primaries are 400 cell, and my car smells considerably more even with the 100 cell Akra HFC's.

$ 3500

Depends on how you plan to use your car. I have my car geared towards the track so if it was for me it would be suspension or Big Brakes. I've done the BBS 20' LM's which is basically the show car look, then I discovered the world of tracking and I never looked back.

IMO 20s belong on a 5 series and not an M3

I lost track of how many times I have posted on this forum that my car with primary cat deletes (MS test pipes) and an otherwise stock midsection doesn't smell whatsoever.

Yet every time without fail there is someone -who runs a different setup- that will say it does smell. Even though he/she might have never ran or tried that particular setup I speak of. They just know better somehow

Guess I'll just keep on repeating

I found this a while back:

"The numbers achieved were very impressive indeed: the M3, equipped with the factory exhaust system, achieved 351 wheel horsepower, a very realistic number when considering the car’s 400 crank horsepower rating, and the repeated runs that corroborated this number. This M3, when tested with the Eisenmann system only an hour and a half later, produced 364hp at peak- a 13hp gain! Even more interestingly, 100rpm earlier, at 7900 RPM, the Eisenmann system produced 363hp, while the factory system only allowed the car to produce 348hp- a 15hp gain!"

Sounds pretty good to me, Eisenmann Race FTW!

3.5k and you want power mods, well then:

- mid pipes
- tune
- used exhaust
