PM's for prices

Just curious why most vendors/folks don't put prices in the thread(s) and you have to always PM?

I have been a member of a bunch of different threads for various cars and other hobby's and this seems to be the only one that is this way. I was just curious.

It is kind of annoying.

Not sure if this is the only reason, but many manufacturers won't allow you to "advertise" below a certain price. Furthermore, you may not want someone holding to a special price weeks, months, or years later.

Just my educated guess.

I would think that would be the same for other manufactures of other car parts, accessories etc but they post prices.

I just think folks should post them and give the customers the choice of who they want to go with based on price, service, experience or whatever else makes them choose.

All I find myself doing is now having to PM all these people to get the same information I would if the price was just posted.

I think I must be missing something or just lame. IDK seems logical to me.

A few reasons.

1) Some vendors don't want to be undercut in public.

2) Some members will undoubtedly decide to add "their opinion" of the level of discount being offered (i.e. whining and complaining about how vendor XXX is still charging too much and they can get it cheaper for vendor YYY)

3) Some manufacturer's don't like vendors starting price wars on their products in the public. And vendors don't like pissing off their suppliers.

A buyer can still get a good deal but they will have to do some work to get it (versus having it laid out on a silver platter).

So in theory then if I was looking for say a certain exhaust or something then I could post a thread and have all vendors PM me there best price.

Just spit-balling.

Makes sense to me. I don't bother if not listed. I'm for the silver platter.

Retailers also have to abide by MAP (minimum advertised price) set by the manufacturer.

im with you on this as well. if you advertise about the products, might as well include the price so customers can get a complete picture and make a decision right then to buy it or move on and find something else

This is the reason why I don't buy on this forum as much as others where prices are posted

Forum rules.

In any case, anybody who is too lazy to take 4 seconds to type up a PM shouldn't waste their precious time surfing forums.

Nothing to do with laziness. Everything to do with getting the best price from the best company. Also very sleezy that you can't offer the same price to everyone and post that. Fine if at point of purchase you do something a bit deeper for your best customers.

I've noticed stereotyping too in some vendors. I have a E92 328 let's say I ask for something and it's quoted $45. I think the guy asking for the same exact thing that owns a '12 E92 M3 might be quoted more.

This pretty much hits the nail on the head. A lot of brands do not allow advertising below a certain MAP (Minimum Advertised Price). To do so would mean we could be black listed and prevented from selling the product. Asking for a price via PM ensures you guys get the best price, and we don't get in trouble for offering it to you.

Forum members shouldn't be insulted when they get different prices from different vendors. Some vendors have different strategies on selling their product. Larger companies tend to go for uber low prices and volume, and some of the smaller shops do higher prices and lower volume. It can be tricky competing that way. We try to offer our best price to our customers right off the bat so there isn't any haggling, but I can't tell you the number of times we've had to sell at cost or very low profit just to stay competitive with the larger vendors.

Anyway, for the most part you will get a better deal than the advertised price when you PM for pricing, and its usually well worth your time

It is very annoying and as a customer "I am not lazy" not wanting to type a PM, moreso all the info including pricing should be avail in one area. Makes more marketing sense to a purchaser like myself who loves to spend money impulsively. That being said, I understand vendors can't list prices below a certain $$, but if you guys check these vendors websites (where pricing is listed) most parts are the same $$ as getting quoted via PM so that theory is out the window. Not all forums are like this as well.

I'd agree with most of the reasons already stated. I'll also add that it is hardly limited to this forum. Most forums I have been on will have requests to PM.

It is pretty much standard on the S2ki forums (S2000) and on the Calguns forums-as such I can say that it even crosses between different industries. Don't worry, you meet the nicest people in PMs.

I love this PM for price thing. Still waiting on 2 different responses. Sure would be nice to just know the price and go order or not.
