So I took it to my local dealership and they changed the rear brake pads claiming the rear brake sensor was responsible for the squeal even though I told them it seemed to be coming from the front. I picked up the car yesterday and sure enough, the noise is still there

I called the SA today and this was her response:

We have already changed the rear brake pads and if you want to change the front ones, you will have to pay out of pocket because BMW will not cover it as the brake pads are still within specThat is by far the dumbest explanation I have received. So I asked her again what that had to do anything with the squeal and she said that's the best they could offer since the front pads are practically new.

Makes no frickin' sense
Um that makes perfect sense. If they are within spec why should they replace them, regardless of dirt between the pad and rotor making a squeal which could be the issue?

I wasn't upset at why they wouldn't change it. I was more annoyed at their reluctance to address it. Instead of saying we will check it out, they stated that the brake pads may have to be switched and I will need to pay for them. No thanks !

And being within spec doesn't mean anything if the pad is cracked or the surface is pitted. Premature failure on pads is not uncommon. That being said, this is probably nothing but just a minor squeal so I'll deal with it.

You make it sound like I am looking for freebees here I did explain to them that I want them to take care of the squeal. I never asked them to change the front pads but common sense would dictate that they should first change the front pads to see if it goes away before they start diagnosing the other more expensive components. What pissed me off was that they were not interested in finding out the cause assuming it could only be the pads which they did not want to cover under warranty.
It would be up here in Canada. Trust me it is exceptional. Had a friend with less than 1k miles on his M and had brake issues. They wouldnt do anything. Friend had to buy new rotors out of pocket.

My HPDE instructor uses these as his street/track combo pad and really likes them. The only thing he notices is that their cold performance is pretty bad, so that can make for some pucker moments when you first start off in the morning if you don't keep that in mind -- but after comparing his E36 M3 with HPSes to an E36/8 M Coupe with StopTechs on the track (not apples to apples, I know), he felt that the StopTechs faded a bit more.

The HPSes were a bit more expensive than the StopTechs, too. I went with StopTech because I read good things, but the HPSes were the only other pad I was considering.

Garage List
2004 BMW M3  [4.50]
2011 BMW E90 M3  [5.00]
2013 BMW 328i  [5.00]
I would put some anti-squeal past on the fronts. I'm sure the rears wear faster if you're beating on it with DSC or MDM on.
