Dealers say that 'modules crap out' during updates...
Is it true... Well, partially. This is something that was much more rampant back in the day when Progman and SSS was used. Ever since ISTA/P was released, module failure is a rare occurrence. The real truth of the matter is that they usually don't want to update it because in some cases it takes hours, and that causes them to lose a workable bay for another car that can be pushed in and out. I have updated hundreds of cars without a single module failure. Most people wind up getting the BPMFlash cable which kills two birds with one stone - the 240E update, as well as a performance tune suited for the vehicles modifications. You can't go wrong there. If flashed properly, there is absolutely no reason for any module failure, especially when updating only DCT/DME and not the entire car. I probably updated 10 DCT's and DME's last week to the latest versions, as a newer DCT version was recently released. Zero issues using the factory ICOM and the factory software from Germany for updating modules.

So I went yesterday, since the SA told me the car was rdy, and when I get there I asked him about the software version to see if they had upgraded it or not. He called a tech I think and asked him what the latest software version was.... He didn't even check or asked what the version on the car is, but he is telling me that since the car was in there and they replaced the sensors for the break that the car gets updated automatically. Anyway ended up saying that the version was 427.xx, so ummm what is he giving me???
I had to leave the car there because the low air light stays on from the tire, and says Inactive, so they gotta check the sensor for that or something. Any ideas into what I should talk to him about today??? Or does it seem like he's trying to avoid the software update, or maybe it was done and he just doesn't know how to explain it??? I still haven't gotten no work order, he had given me the papers yesterday but I gave them to the valet parking guy so he can bring the car, and then we just took it back because of the Inactive light thing. So couldn't really read the work order, but I will today when I pick it up.

I just flashed my software to 240E and I gained 30HP!
I'm kidding! But I really did have Tom at EAS flash my 08 to the new 240E update. I have to say Tom is awesome. He didn't try to sell stuff I didn't need, but instead he was a wealth of information. He checked my current software version which was 220E which suprised me since I didn't think dealer had updated it in a while. Tom openly admitted that I probably won't feel any substantial gains in power. All I can say is that I don't feel any more power but I did notice a smoother delivery of power across the band. Normally when im passing someone and step on the gas, my car violently jumps up. Like going from mild to crazy. Now, its pulls strong all the way through. I like it seems more predictable. If i want the crazy? I just put the pedal to the floor until i hit the overdrive. Worth it? I think so. Plus its cool to see all the other cars in the parking lot and in the garage bay.

Waste of money. 220E is not even really that old. Today I updated two cars from 80E software, that's old and worth it in that case. Other than that all of you should not be fooled by sales gimmicks. If you're 190E or above I wouldn't even bother. If someone wants to offer me a dyno I will flash every version from the inception of e9x m3 to prove it - over 10 versions. Then you will see the truth. If you don't believe me ask Sal at eVolve also. We've had long discussions about this 'smoke and mirrors'.

Just emailed my SA at Momentum BMW in Houston asking him what my current version was. He looked up my inf0o and told me that I was running: E89X-08-03-520.
Does this sound like the most updated version (231E)?

Quite frankly, we just don't understand where these huge gains come from. We only saw a handful of cars with something as old as 80E (even had one 60E). The gains were minimal. Going from anything like 140E-220E > 231E made absolutely no difference at all. Well.. it could if you don't log the variables ... The testing procedure includes us making sure the older software is given a chance to perform with as low as possible IAT's and allowing using the dyno test with the stabilised ignition advance. Then load in the update and we see now higher ignition advance being achieved. So this is with respect to properly controlled dyno testing for power. We are also gaining the same power once tuning and exhausts are done on earlier versions as late versions. At one point we thought it might be the USA software being different but this proved to be incorrect. Many many evolve-R customers have had this update and every time I am asked if the power will be increased my response is the same. Apparently it does but we have not seen enough evidence to say it's definite. However, nothing wrong with having the latest SW... especially if its free of charge. |

Not sure what i had or what i have now. I was reading that the factory update is one of the better upgrades as far as reliable power.
This is what the paper from the dealership reads ISTA/P Version: 48.1.002 Integration level (plant): E89X-08-03-520 Integration level (old) E89x-11-03-511 Integration level (new) E89X-12-07-508 Any able to shed some light on all this? Thanks!

Dealers and BMW will not just update mostly due to the risks associated with programming. Failed control units add up in price quickly. Sometimes if you're lucky, you can get updated for another reason. Re: nav, telephone or audio system software updates needed. The entire car gets updated at the same time, so in that case you're good to go!
Edit: ISTA/P 2.46 is referred to as 231E around here. 2.47 is referred to as 240E. I'm not sure what 2.48 is referred to as, since it is only a couple of weeks old. I've yet to see any data on available tunes or tuner experience with the latest version, if there is indeed a relevant update to the previous version. Perhaps some one with experience in the tuning aspect of this platform will stumble in here and offer their input. |

I'll take a look at the factory files tomorrow and tell you what it is. 240E would be the minimum for sure. 240E was released with 47.1 I believe.

Software for 25 other modules in the car too. This thread just talks about the engine part. At E89x-011-09-505, you'll be on ISTA/P 2.44.0. Probably 220E. No reason to update unless you're getting a tune anyway.

There won't be a big difference for you, so I say no. If you have only had your car updated by BMW, it has DCT software that corresponds to the DME software (220E in your case) because BMW updates the WHOLE car at once.
