Coding. You can also activate BMW efficient dynamics display that shows you when to shift for maximum efficiency (6MT only I believe).

He can do it remotely but if you just want to get real time MPG it may not be worth it. It's just one change to one module that should take a couple of minutes to do. Find someone local. There are a couple of guys on E90post in the Toronto area that do coding.
