Seatbelt Handover/Extender Spring Failure, Fix??

The spring on the end of the seatbelt extender mechanism has failed. It doesn't have the same tension as the passenger side and doesn't grab the seatbelt anymore. I'm on the CPO warranty so I'm sure its not covered, I can delete it but I would like to fix it if I could. Has anyone taken apart the arm? Fixed the spring?

Wait, are you saying the extender doesn't go all the way? If it does extend all the way, it might just be your seatbealt that's a little worn.

If the mechanism is shot, I think you can get to it from the back of the panel and get a replacement part.

Common problem on the e92..I believe you have to replace either the entire motor or the extender, no individual parts are available

There's a spring inside number 16, its lost its tension. I have to figure out how to remove just that piece.

And replace it with what? As I said there are no individual pieces available..I suppose you could try and "fix" the spring..but I wouldnt count on that working..especially if the spring has lost its tensile strenght.

Damn, over $300 just on the part for the extender. Mine broke off at the tip and it is not opening when the arm gets extended.

Whoever was on the design team for this ridiculous thing should have their engineering degrees stripped. I wonder if they even bothered making a test stand for this before they slapped it into production.

(Also, I checked on mine, not covered under CPO).

This is an interesting thought- if you know it's related to a spring, once you get it out, you could take some measurements (length, dia, and maybe even the "k" value) and then go online and find something similar. Otherwise, I believe it's a $400 replacement for the assy.

http://www.leespring.com/

Having said all that, unless the spring is somehow damaged, it's unlikely to be worn out.

Covered under warranty. The extender is known to be a common problem on these cars.

Just to chirp in...
Happened on my e93, only the belt would not extend out. Without being buckled a passanger sets off the seat belt alarm. Drive ya nuts! So, no passangers till BMW ordered the part (under warranty) and replaced it. Took about a week.

You can purchase just the extender arm $56.00 . T o take the defective one out, let it extend fully, just grab it and pull it the rest of the way out. There is a flat piece behind the arm that will come out. Observe how the flat piece fits and put it back in position when you install the new arm. To install the new arm, lower your window and when you hear the mechanism cycle, before it retracts, insert the new arm into the slot, push slightly and when the mechanism retracts it will pull the new arm back in with it. Pretty simple fix. In this forum you will not find any other instructions on how to fik it. Check with Parts.com to obtain the arm only. You do not need to pull any panels to do this fix. Hope this helps. BMW of Alexandria Virginia has the left and right arms for less than $60.00.

This is why I pulled the fuse for this stupid thing. I'll deal with having to reach really far back to grab the seatbelt. I'm used to it now.

Do you happen to have the part numbers for the extender arm? Maybe it might be something the dealerships locally can order if we spoon feed them.

How do u disconnect is it just a simple fuse pull? Is there one fuse for both sides?

It's actually an $80 part and a 5 minute DYI. All the info and the part you need are here: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...ght=ricfutures

Kit comes with a thin metal "flap" (lack of a better term) that helps you remove the old one. You just need to find the clip that holds it in place.

Also, you don't need to remove the mechanism from the car to perform surgery. Simply turn off the car, open your door, hold the arm preventing it from retracting until it stays put. Replace then turn the car on. Arm should retract once you close the door.

As over engineered as this thing is I love having it.

Has anyone actually had this replaced under CPO warranty? Was at the dealer today for an oil change and asked about it and they said it wasn't covered and wanted $135 just for a diagnostic. Others have said it should be covered though. I don't really see why it would be excluded, unless they consider it a wear and tear piece.

I'm sure it would work just fine. But defeats the purpose of the seatbelt handover, they put it there so that passengers could easily get in to the back seat but the driver could still reach the seatbelt. Although I don't understand why they didn't just use the same seats as the convertible where the entire seatbelt assembly is built into the chair.
