The $64K Question - Per Automobile

Looks like the M3 still edges out its core "coupe" rivals 4 years hence... Although, the M3 came in second place by losing in outright agility, handling and emotional appeal to the Porsche Boxster S.

Personally I happen to like the looks of the Boxster, but you will only get a very base stripped car for $64k, Audi not possible, and the C63 base again - obviously with out the PP like the test car in the article.

The M3 came in at the lowest price with spartan options save for ZCP and DCT @ $69K. The listed performance times for the M3 in this piece seem slower than most that I have seen.

That being said there is still some life left in the old girl

I think that's beyond amazing results for a car that has been out for an entire generation and even then I bet it didn't lose by that much. Also there is a $30k markup of options on that Porsche...for $90k you should definitely be able to get a better car

+1 You will hardly ever see a "base" Porsche at least on the street.

If I lived in an area where I could hit some curvy roads every day, the cayman or next boxster would be a consideration. I don't, so something north of 400hp is a must for me. I went from a Z06 to my current M3 and that was pretty big power drop. I know the power/weight of the Porsche helps but I supposed I'm still juvenile in the sense that I need thrust, and lots of it (even more than the M3 provides) for my next.

Saw the magazine today. I was surprised the RS5 had the fastest laptime by a good margin. $90k for a Boxster is ludicrous.

Good article. New Boxster is superb...but 90K is a lot. Might as well buy a 911 when talking those prices. Not surprised the Boxster won at all, but it doesnt fit in this test at all as far as the type of car goes. They should have stuck in the IS-F to see how it performed rather than a car that serves an entirely different market. Good win for the Boxster S though nonetheless. The higher capabilities and limits show when you look at the stats.

the new boxster is awesome but you can't get into one with all the necessary package for less than 80k. so the 64k question is debunked...

And 0-60 in 4.6 seconds? Was this done uphill or at 7,000 feet elevation?

The only time I ever tried 0-60 times when my M3 was stock was within my first week of ownership. It was early Sept in SoCal and it was almost 100 degrees outside and my car had about 250 miles on the ODO. My first attempt was 4.8 sec bouncing off the fuel cut-off in 1st gear. So I figured I could do better and tried again. This time I short shifted first @ just below 8,000 RPM and logged 4.2 seconds. I'm sure with practice and a cool day I could have achieved high 3-second times easy.

All runs were recorded on my P-Box with 0% slope at sea level.

Why is it that when the M3 is beaten around a track there is always an excuse why it lost? "bad drivers" "its a power track"...just seems silly to me. It was slower at that particular track...can't that just be accepted?

The article is similar to my experience which is why I've ordered a boxster s. It feels phenomenal behind the wheel. I was debating a 5th e9x m3 and one drive of the boxster made my decision for me. When it comes to equipment, if you get an M3 and boxster similarly equipped, you're within $5k at msrp but you won't have to add a BBK to get decent brakes or do suspension mods. There is a greater spread between msrp and invoice in the boxster s and the M3 and I was able to negotiate 7% off msrp. So by the time you add in the gas guzzler tax on the M3 - the boxster s is cheaper!

You certainly can run up the price of a boxster but you get more technolgy i.e. ceramic brakes, torque vectoring etc and a more options to personalize the look of the car.

Looks to me like porsche has a winner with the new boxster! I just have to wait until the end of January to get mine...

Well duh. Companies want you to buy whatever makes them the most money even if its not in the customers best interest. I don't think I could ever take a base Porsche of $90k when I could buy an individual m3 and supercharge and mod it to my tastes.

Look at the 30 to 70mph passing stats, M3 did it in 4 sec, Merc in 4.4 sec, and Porsche and Audi in 4.5 sec. That's a significant gearing advantage in every day driving and overtaking.

The article just re-confirms once more what the E92 M3 is good at (all-around balanced performance), despite present day competitors. For those who intend to take a car to the track, and can appreciate the harmony between power, suspension, transmission, etc - the M3 is the top choice (unless you want the $90k Boxster - ack, although I do think it's nice car too). If you want more straight line power and torque and that's your bag, then the Merc. / RS5 might be more your taste.

I agree with that too.. for 90-100 im gonna spend a little more get an m6 coupe

I like the porsches but i dont think there as special as they are priced.

I would spend extra and get a CPO ferrari or lambo lol
