ESS VT2 Superchargers and engine braking

Hi Guys,

I've heard from one guy that after he installed he ESS 575 kit, the engine braking was reduced. In fact, his words were "the supercharger is pushing the car and I have to use more brakes". I'm sure he wan't talking about pushing the car under throttle.

Has anyone noticed reduced engine braking after installing their kits? Or could this be faulty BOV or wastegate (or whatever it is SC kits have)?

I haven't experienced this at all. Feels the same as stock when slowing down, but I am DCT so maybe 6MT is different?? ESS uses a bypass valve btw.

If anything, I would think that the supercharger would ADD drag to the engine and enhance the engine braking.

I experience this all the time on my vt2-600 kit (DCT). It happens usually at higher speeds and higher gear (4th gear and higher for me).

Example: If I'm going 100 mph in 4th gear and I want to slow down to 65 I used to be able to let off the gas and just downshift. I now have to use the brakes as well. If i just downshift the car doesn't really slow down (it does decrease speed but slowly compared to n/a)

It's my only complaint with the supercharger.

ah huh!!! there is truth in the basket
Just to compare, in 2nd and 3rd (6MT) when slowing down for a traffic light, you don't really have to use your brakes. This car has the most engine braking I've ever experienced.

How severe is this "lack of engine braking" compared to N/A ... ie % scale?

In 2nd and 3rd it's almost identical to N/A. From my experience (about 3-4k miles and 3 track days) on the sc the faster you go the more worse it gets.

Hard to say exactly..30-35% worse.. I eventually just got used to it.

Brakes were installed on the car by the manufacturer to use them

Yes, brakes were installed for a reason. Engine braking is important too especially if someone tracks their car. So far two people have confirmed this issue - so it exists. I just wanted to know how severe is it.

Without a doubt it is far less than NA S65. I had to re learn some braking after the SC install, but all good now. No matter how efficient the BOV's are there is a time delay until you are back to 14.7 psi ! It does give the sensation of being "pushed" but it is adaptable.

You'll get used to it quickly

Its adaptation issue on ECU

Drive car in manual only (if a DCT) and it sorts itself after 300 kms or so

Mine did it when I stalled the 625 kit. Seemed a isolated issue.

Now its perfect.
