'08-'09 OEM Air Filter different from '10-'12??

Gents, My M3 is off warranty so I recently ordered some simple maintenance parts from Turner including an airfilter. I just noticed that the part # is different for '10-'12 and 08'-09'. My question is, what is the difference between them AND will the '10-'12(part # 13727838804) airfilter fit in an '08.

I apologize in advance if this has been covered in the past. thanks

The '10-'13 have a rubber stopper on the top; the '08-'09 dont.

North American M3s had a different air box and a more restrictive charcoal lined filter compared to the European models in '08 and '09. Starting in '10, NA models got the same air box and filter as the Europeans.

my friend who is a bmw tech put an extra euro air filter that he had in my 08.it also had a piece sticking out so it was a tight fit but it worked.

The only difference is the centering pin, and filter design. We have the Macht Schnell Air Filter Adapter, this changes your pin to the 08-09 style so you can use the filter you have now.

I have them in stock, let me know if you would like me to ship one out.

Hi Tom, I have an '08 m3 and the filter is for +'10 models. My understanding is that the adapter is for +'10 US m3 models to allow proper fitment for '08-'09 oem air filters...

We didn't get separate charcoal filters here on the M3. That was the E60 M5 that had them.

I have the euro airbox in my 08 M3, same thing as the US one other than the adapter issue.

I surprised about this info, everything I have read so far indicated the early NA M3s had a more restrictive filter...

There is no such thing as an Euro airbox. The differences are as follows:

2008-2009 US M3: Charcoal Lined Filter
2010-2013 US M3: Paper Filter
2007-2013 EU M3: Paper Filter

S65 M3 Charcoal Lined Filter (US)


S65 M3 Paper Filter (US & EU)


Macht Schnell EU Air Filter Adapter


EU versions always had the paper filter design, even in 2007-2009 models. Also, the centering pin length is shorter on M3s equipped with the paper filter.

If you have a 08-09 M3 with the charcoal lined filter and would like to use the filter you have (10-13), simply replace your centering pin in your airbox with the Macht Schnell unit and you will now have the option to run either filter.

The different pin is what I wanted to imply when I metioned the different airbox, I should have been more precise .

Sorry for the confusion, had it backwards. The adapter is to allow a 08-09 filter to run on a EU or 2010+ US vehicle.

This would serve no purpose on the stock filter, since it is more restrictive.

Charcoal filters are more restrictive.

Best flowing filter would be an oiled-type like the Macht Schnell filters.

The 08's and 09's did have a more restrictive filter with an integrated charcoal layer. NA MY 2010 M3's came with a different air box and filter from the EU model M3

You weren't wrong, Tom @ EAS was!!! There are two different part numbers for the air boxes.

One for NA M3s up to 09/2009 production: 13717838567

One for European M3s and US M3's 10/2009 production and later: 13717838566

I don't care if the only difference was the pin, the European M3s up to 09/2009 listed a different part number for the air box than the North American M3s. If you went to the dealer to get the pin they wouldn't know what you were talking about, and they would have to order a complete air box from an EU car or MY 2010 and up NA car. Even though the air boxes are identical save the pin, the part number means they are two different parts to a parts guy!
