Had a 335d for a day while my M was in the shop. It's a nice car, pulls well in the daily grind traffic, quite similar in casual acceleration scenarios to the 335i I had before the M.

But if you step outside the casual gas pedal twiddling and stomp on it, it is most definitely absolutely slower than a 335i, let alone than an M3. Anyway not that you guys needed convincing, but it cannot hurt having another opinion from someone who has actually driven the thing.

my biggest dissappointment with the 335d was actually the gas mileage. In my traffic conditions and driving style, I get 14mpg in the M, got 17.x in the 335i and under 19.x in the 335d. So basically just a 10% improvement over the 335i, wait, that's it after all the hoopla??

No thanks.

Well food for thought, diesel doesn't cost as much as premium gasoline, that gives another advantage to the 335d. It does run well on an economical note, but certainly can't cash a cheque for the ego of that one owner.

I've owned a new 335d E92 back in 2007-2010,it was a Euro spec and 286HP standard. It was a quick car. With a tune it was approx 345-350HP and I kept up with E92 M3's and beat E46 M3's..

I now own an E46 M3, turns out the M3 (E46) is just as fast as a tuned 335d when driven properly. Half of M3 drivers E46 & E92 are not maximising the cars performance (even in a straight line), it's a high revving N/A motor that always needs that's extra gear dropped. 55mph on the highway in 6th needs dropping, not 5th, not 4th, hell not even 3rd but 2nd for MAXIMUM ATTACK. If you do not do this the the 335d will win, it has massive accessible performance because of all the torque.

Both great cars, but the M3 is on another level for driver focus and involvement. The ///M diff is sublime.

I saw a video of a 335d beating a Ferrari 360 in a drag race.

over a journey of say 800 miles the 335d would get there quicker as the m3 would to keep stopping for fuel

...and a Jetta TDI would be there before the 335d for a similar reason.

Still have no desire for a diesel car.

360 is slow... had 3 passengers in my M and ran away from a 360 easily. There is no comparison between an M3 and a normal 3 unless you drive like my wife.

I have one with the JBD tune in it. Ran my friend's e92 from a light and freeway just for comparison. Both times I got a decent jump with around 500 ft/lbs of tq, but he ended up cathing me and passing me. I recall seeing couple time slips of 335d with a tune and drag radials doing 12.6 in the 1/4 mile so ultimately it is a cool car that's fun to drive every day because of instant tq, but BMW built the M3 making sure that no other 3 series will be a competition stock for stock.

Actually I drive from Orange County to SF Bay area and it's 403 miles each way. I do it with the 335d without refuelling.

Funny thread

I am installing my Burger Motorsports JBD today in my 335d.

I never thought of the 335d as something that competes with M cars.

Mine has the M-Sport package, and it feels very mildly M-like (I have owned M3s). It is a 4000 pound car, though.

As a practical matter, the only place that an M3's greater potential can be realized is on a race track. Then it is all about the driver.

If you have never driven on a race track, then you have no idea what I am talking about. Until you show up in an E46 M3 and get passed by a Miata, it is impossible to believe that it is possible.

For your entertainment, here is a video of me following my brother driving his M5 and trying to avoid running into him (I am in Porsche) at Laguna Seca. Read the description for the purpose of the video. You should get a kick out of it.

Testing the claim that the Tesla S is as good as the new M5. Porsche Cayman R camera chase car. average laps 1:48 with a 1:47 best for the M5 with clearly an opportunity to improve. Tesla S lap time was established by factory driver at a separate event. Tesla owners declined to participate in actual track test, so this was the best test we could manage. Best lap to date is a 1:51 by a factory driver in a Model S. Unclear if it was a completely stock performance edition.
"

On the street, my soon-to-be 500 pound feet of torque is as much "M" as I need. If I need more "M", I reach for the "P".

M = Too Much McDonalds in 2013, by the way.

I have a 2011 335d and a 2011 M3.

The speed is comparable, but the M3 gets 300 miles to a tank while the d approaches 600.

With all the driving I do for work, the tax deduction is equal to my car payment so I'm essentially getting the car for free after a few years.

The d is my mule, and my M gets pampered and only comes out for special occasions.

Get both!

We have both, and love them for what they are.....great cars! I think that's the point here. For everyday driving, the 335d has so much more useable power, and it never feels like you doing 100mph. I drive 60-100 miles a day and it is the perfect car for that. The M is crazy fun when you want to do some spirited driving, or just wanna beat it down. I think the 335d is faster in day to day driving, but the M will reel it in in a hurry on the freeway. 90% of a car is the driver anyway.
