If I recall correctly, and I don't mean to speak for Mike, but I think this car will be using a stand-alone. Not sure who's doing the tuning though.

What I want to see is a 4.4L S65 with aggressive cams and headwork properly tuned on the MSS65 DME. ... with stepped-long tube headers for auditory sake, haha.
You mean MSS60 DME - the MSS65 powers the S85 V10 Motor.

Personally I am a fan of using the stock engine management system, but a finely tuned standalone (although a lot more work) will do the trick. Experience with tuning the factory vanos profiles seems to be hit or miss. But I can tell you first hand that the MSS6x DME + Cams, with a properly amended vanos profile can make some serious power. I worked on an E60 M5 that had Schrick cams and it went from 420 baseline to 464whp with some dyno tuning and particular vanos changes to account for the different camshafts. It's also very important that whoever installs the camshafts does it properly, I have seen too many cars with the cam timing off due to improper installation. VAC is certainly on top of things, and I'm excited to see this build progress.

I used to live pretty close to VAC (this was 7 years ago though) and have been there a few times. My roomate in college, Steve Small, used to work there (around the time that the owner passed away), and I have always enjoyed vising the shop and seeing all of the serious eye candy there.

Keep up the good work!

Mike, not to hijack thread, but on the topic of cams do they pass SMOG here in Cali?

M-Power FTW! At least old M-Power, the new ones go into limp mode faster than a fat b!tch who sat down too fast.

Yes, should pass although technically it's not a smog 'legal' change. But then again any of our mods aren't either

In for results impressions on cam tuning on the S65, with the blowers providing such an easy button for big power, NA development hasn't had the spotlight it should have on these cars with such an awesome starting point. Some of us who plan to keep our cars until we need a coffin and then be buried in them and will need a rebuild anyway might be interested in this kind of thing when it's time to freshen the motor...heh

Man, I can't wait for that!

Have you guys done any S65 low-compression builds?

Yep. We have done S65 stock, FI and na stroker builds so far :0

Benvo - thanks. We may mess with the stock DME when we tear our E92 apart. Could be a fun winter project. Of course, we have to do a proper track build (S54 prob) also over the winter...it will be hard to prioritize!!

best is to call as it is all going to vary. this isn't a off the shelf piece, and there are many options when it comes to building a piece.

^ This

m3an - I will follow up with you tomorrow. Timing is pretty good for the machine shop, we are getting things under control. Mark, you too!

I have 2 core S65s in house and 5 more on the way.

ps. Dinan charges $25k for
Dinan proprietary billet crankshaft
Dinan proprietary lightweight forged pistons
Dinan proprietary light-weight connecting rods
Balanced and blueprinted engine build
Dinan electronics and engine management software

No head work (at all), no TBs, standard oil system etc. Obviously they can offer everything if requested, price will be adjusted appropriately
