So there really is no point in balancing track tires? I'm finally getting a set of track wheels so I'll save myself the $$$ and not balance.

Same issue regardless of whom mounts them.This last set were put on dry with no lubricant and you can see how much they turned.Nitto NT05's with Stoptech ST60/40 with Pagid 14/29's.The rears turn much more than the fronts.A lot of more expensive wheels have knurled bead seats like the HRE's & Forgeline track wheels.
I used to have this issue on my Z06 with factory Grandsport 11"wheels with Hoosiers.A lot of Vette guys balance the wheels bare then mount the tires to help deal with this issue.

My tires on my E36 rotated all the time. It is a pretty common thing on track. Makes balancing kind of pointless.

They didn't care about balancing when they were mounting a set of slicks per month for me

This is definitely what I'll do, if I find that my tires are spinning on the rims. I guess the point of that is to balance the wheel, and then just live with whatever imbalance is added by the tire. That would minimize the worst case, any way (tire is imbalanced, but then works its way 180 degrees from the mounted position, doubling the amount of imbalance).

Honestly, I'm finding this somewhat mindblowing. I've personally experienced vibration on the road from improperly balanced wheels/tires (though not on this car) and it scares me to think of what that would do at twice the speed or more.

Knurling should help or eliminate the tire turning issue.I have only seen it on track specialized wheels.Funny thing is that I do not see any mention of it on the HRE or Forgeline sites

Your going to laugh at my solution for this. Rotate your wheels from the left side of the car the right side of the car every track day. It self corrects itself every other day! I put a mark on my tires at the valve stem. Once the tire slips about an inch, you start to feel the vibration.

Worth a shot if you are not worried about keeping the tires in the proper orientation.

Good point. The NT01's and Hoosiers that I've run aren't directional so I've never had to worry about this.
Fun fact. GTRr's are one of the few cars that come with knurled rims from the factory.

Interesting thread.

I've never thought about not balancing wheels for the track.

Personally I use all my wheels both on the street and the track and if I don't balance them (well the front at least) I get a bit of an unpleasant vibration at freeway speeds. Every time it seems. Which is equally felt on the track. We hit 155+ at AAA speedway and the shake of unbalanced wheels is a mild inconvenience but an inconvenience nonetheless (IMHO)

I balance my own wheels on an friend's old Snap On balancer. Static first then dynamic.

I use HVAC/aluminum tape from Harbor Freight and the weights stay put even at 100+ track days.

I do try to remove all the tire gummies from the wheels after track days.
