I wonder who would win in a roll-on race (ignore off the line traction), a 328 driven at it's limit or an M3 shifting at 7,000 RPM?

M3 by a mile. You lose some potential short-shifting, but the M3 has loads more torque, even when you're not at the sharp end of the power band.

lol my favorite part of the post was "what a pussy, no offense." yup, because when you say something blatantly offensive, saying "no offense" makes it all ok.

but yeah, OP should

anything aside from letting your car sit in the garage does "damage" to the car. it's an M, drive as you please no significant damage.

Yes, it will do it, but unless you really know what you're doing, have some track experienc, etc, I wouldn't recommend doing this with DSC off. If you want to try it, make sure there is no other traffic anywhere near you, you are going straight with good traction conditions and you are ready to catch it when the rear breaks loose. And lots of room to catch it before you end up in the ditch, guard rail or wrapped around a tree.

In any case, I was on the freeway and wanted to give the car a little go. As a result, I waited for some clearing, I was going between 70 and 80 mph and stupidly I shifted down too many times and hit 2nd gear on accident (this was the dumb thing). As a result, my car quickly jumped to 7000 rpm and it completely scared me. I then quickly shifted back up to 7th gear and just drove home normally. My question here is, did I cause any permanent damage to my transmission? Should I be paranoid about anything? I never push my car, I usually drive it grandma-ish, but I wanted to have a little bit of fun and that completely failed.

Thanks everyone
where in san jose do you live?

OK - I saw this in other threads and it works great. Any other "secret" features of the DCT?

From page 29 of the Supplementary owners manual that came with your car:
"Rapid downshifting: to accelerate rapidly, e.g. when passing, you can skip several gears in sequential mode. To do so, press the accelera- tor past the resistance point and pull the left shift paddle once or press the selector lever for- ward once. This provides maximum accelera- tion."

I would assume this would work in S1-6. I personally have used in S4-6. Read the manuals. You'd be surprised what else this car has that you can do. Launch control is explained on page 32.

Just Launch Control which isn't really a secret. You can adjust the RPM's for Launch Control as well. Check out the Supplementary Owners Manual. Lots of good stuff in there.

Sorry about this paranoid post everyone, I realize that I need to push the car in order to have fun with it; its the entire purpose of having an M3. I am slowly transitioning myself from driving grandma-ish to driving it more aggressively!! I spent more money on this car than I have on any other car so its taking me a while to get adjusted and have a little fun.

My other car is a 2004 Subaru WRX (modded with a 2.5 Liter built motor, new turbo, suspension, 5 speed manual, etc etc) that I autocross and track with; as a result, I know how much fun a car can be once you mash through the gears

Thanks for the replies everyone
