I don't want to build anything. This isn't a hobby for me or something I like to collect. Strictly for protection purposes. So something ready to go and reliable.

Poor lighting but this is my RRA LAR15 with EOTech 512 and Grip Pod.
The lack of forward assist and dust cover are not the reasons why I said I wouldn't stake my life on it. I never said it wouldn't be reliable, either. Putting words in my mouth, no?

I haven't heard of people putting thousands of trouble-free rounds downrange with a Sport over the course of classes, training sessions, etc. That's one reason why I'm still skeptical.

FWIW, I've personally examined the BCG and feed ramps on a S&W M&P15 (non-Sport) and everything looked tip-top. Not trying to knock S&W at all.

Before I forget, I did recommend the rifle as a good plinker/entry rifle. Did I not?

Also, I am pretty sure that the Colt rifles have a track record that is a BIT more extensive and established in terms of demonstrating reliability, as compared to the S&W Sport . . . considering that Colt owns the TDP and tens of thousands of American troops rely on Colt M4 carbines on a daily basis. And the Colt can be had for only a couple hundred dollars more.

How has that RRA run for you?

Can't go wrong with a Colt. You can find one for under $1k.

When you say you would "absolutely not" trust your life with it you are implying you question its reliability. I agree the Colt is the best proven, but I would also trust my life with a Sport after hearing many people review it.

So far I have a couple thousand rounds through the RRA and I am very happy with it. All rounds just at a bench range since I do not have easy access to anything else but it has been very reliable and accurate.

Outstanding carbine MP0WER.

I don't think I've seen that VFG ever before.

That's good! I have never heard any negative reports about RRA from those who personally own them and use them.

Thanks!

I'm not terribly crazy about the fore grip. It has 4 locking positions which i like, but it just feels a little cheap in your hand. Cheap as in poorly made. But i haven't handled any other variable grips. So maybe they all feel that way.

Just seems to have a lot of movement when locked in a position. A trait i disliked very much about the original collapsible butt stock. The new magpul stock is awesome, doesn't move at all!

Maybe i'll check out their fore grips.....

Yeah I'd want my VFG to be rock solid. Any movement up there would drive me crazy. I'm currently running a Magpul AFG2 and I like it. I used my Daniel Defense VFG as more of a hand stop anyway. Never have I used a "broom handle" grip on a VFG.

Again though, you have that rifle set up very, very nicely and once you get your VFG issue solved, I'm sure you'll enjoy shooting it even more.

That is a fancy rig. Maybe someday I will convince myself I need something like that.

Very nice.
I've been out of the AR buying game for a while with too many things on my plate for some years. I bought and still have a preban Colt HBAR I purchased new in about 1990. Reading this thread lit the fuse again and upon Ybbiz's recommendation I researched getting a new Colt 6920 FDE. I have cash in hand and was ready to plop it down right now and walk away with it. I was already thinking about posting pics here.
I neglected to keep up on the politics of these arms in the current NY political scene. Due to the AWB these fine carbines arent available to us NY'ers.
The wife and I have been looking for a summer place in Naples, Fl. This recent firearm surprise to me will further expedite our new home purchase.

like this one? I've had this HBAR Elite since 1998. It's a lot of rifle to tote around with that heavy stainless barrel.

Don't you mean winter place in Naples? haha Come on down, our peeps are carrying in internet cafe's if you haven't heard.

Mines a Match Sporter HBAR. Love it and wont sell but a M4 carbine has been on my radar for a long time.
I lived in Clearwater and Tampa for a couple years in the late 80's early 90's. Moved back north in 92 I think it was.
Yeah, were looking in the Naples area now for a winter and retirement place down the road. Wife has family there and its a beautiful area. Prices are still low and taxes are a piece of cake compared to NY!
Its a no lose time to buy down there.

True for both property and firearms.

That would have me angry as well.

I've been eying the FDE model every day now for a while.

However, since I already have two 16" carbines (and one 6920), this SBR is next on my list (Daniel Defense MK18 with 10.3" barrel). Please convince me that it makes sense to procure a third AR-15 and that going through the NFA paperwork process is worth it.

My reasoning is bolded below.
I figure if you don't have friends with guns you may as well be able to arm them with your spare weapons.

Oh yeah, you're welcome. Compete the transaction my friend.

Quote:
Rules to a Gunfight.

1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns.
2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap – life is expensive.
3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.
4. If your shooting stance is good, you’re probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.
5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movement are preferred.)
6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun.
7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.
8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running.
9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on “pucker factor” than the inherent accuracy of the gun. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. “All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket.”
10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.
11. Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
12. Have a plan.
13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won’t work.
14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.
15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.
16. Don’t drop your guard.
17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees.
18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. (In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them.)
19. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.
20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.
21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.
22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.
23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
24. Do not attend a gun fight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than “4″.
25. You can’t miss fast enough to win.

Haha! I love it. Thanks man. I think I'm going to get the wheels in motion on this sometime next week. Added justification: My birthday present to myself.

Thank you sir! You and NYC are quite persuasive.

What I think I'll do is buy the MK18 upper and get that in right away. I'll pick up a AR pistol lower so I can enjoy the 10.3" upper until my tax stamp comes in. That's going to be a brutal wait.

6.8 is no joke. Nice stick!

FWIW, I'd take a hard and careful look at the SIG 516. I have read some scathing reviews and a friend of mine recently sold his because he was less than enamored with the build quality and performance.
