If you don't see much fun+use of the E90 M3, then making a change to whole new SUV field makes sense.

Considering that the current X5 is pretty outdated (~6 yrs old), I wouldn't choose the current X5 lineup.
I disagree as an owner of the current bodystyle X5 and M3. The current X5 navi and body is current and looks better than about 85% of current 2013 SUVs on the market. Thats a fact and I wont argue this.

To be more correct the outdated X5 is the E53, not the E70. Once the 2014 or 2015 X5 comes out then you can call the CURRENT X5 outdated.

Now since I got that out of the way I can say its apples to oranges comparing the two. While I like comfort and interior of the X5 I must say I like the exterior of the M3 (modified, not stock). I have both because I have a weekend/nice weather car and snow/rain foul weather SUV.

I know as I get older the nicer X5M or X6M are looking great but so is a 2009 Lamborghini Gallardo. Its all about what you need and want.

But if its a stock X5M or stock M3 then I would go stock X5M, because the E92 and E90 M3 in stock form looks bad. This car needs a lot of work to get it to a decent looking status, at least for me.

my 2 yr old used the back of my seat for a footrest in the x5. And my front passengers still need to be aware not to put the seat back too much or it'll pinch the kids legs. granted it is slightly roomier than the e90. But the only useable space you'd be gaining is in the trunk. If that's what you need do it or just keep the m3 and buy a base x5. also with 2 car seats, you could put a passenger in the back of the x5 in a pinch but no way in the e90.

the x5 35i with a tune was plenty fast, enough to go head to head with an e46 m3 down the 1/4

Wow that's pathetic for the e46 M3. I thought they were low to mid-13's stock? What does your X5 35i do with the tune? And which tune? Thx.

I have both an X5M and E92 M3, both are great cars and both have their advantages and disadvantages over the other. The X5M is super fast and has a lot of room for me, bring that I'm 6'6" tall. So, the wife drives the M3 and I drive the X5M, and I have an E39 M5 for weekend fun and track events.

If I had to pick one over the other, I would pick the X5M. Plus the X5M is faster!!!

///X5M...tracking a VIR....more so a parade lap with the BMWCCA Tarheel Chapter this past July.

That can be handled in many ways that don't cost $20k more, LOL.

Great opinions on here for the X5M, I have yet to experience one!

I would not mind buying an X5 M. I drove the X6M at an ///M event; ever since then, I fell in love with that motor.

I passed on the X6M as I knew it was up for replacement soon. Kind of contradictory seeing as though I bought a 2012 M3 - but I did so with the fact that it's the last of the N/A V8' ///M cars.

I came very close to buying the X6M - but the day of purchase - I switched gears and bought an F12 650 convertible. Mainly because I am used to the technology in the F Series cars. I will wait for the F15 X to be released and perhaps I will get a "full" ///M version if not I would be perfectly happy with a Cayenne GTS.
