I have no answers...
I think DCT will be OK as it is very durable.

Also, at least in Europe, people will still be able to drive stick. At least the kind of people who whould own a 20 year old M3.

What I am most concerned about is all the electronic control units. Will they survive for such a long time and how will it be with replacement parts?

- It's the last N/A M engine for now.

- It will probably be the last M car which is offered with a manual gearbox

There will be nothing like the M39x in the future so it will somehow be a classic. A highly sophisticated one. Not sure the standard M3s will ever experience what happened to the M330, though. GTS and CRT might be a different story.
All of this ^^^
+ last M3 coupe or vert.

Enjoy that first generation M4 coupe or vert.

what would be really cool is that they just call it the M4 from now on, and we would have the last M3 ever built. that could make it hold some value in the future..your car would be the latest m3

All I will say is that if the e9x series are the last to be offered with a manual gear box, I'm pretty sure that demand will stay high in the near future for that, and other reasons already cited in the thread.

Have you made sweet man-love to that new-to-you 6mt gearbox yet? You're sure finding every opportunity to post about it.

There is nothing wrong with a man professing his love for his new 6MT gearbox. Aren't we all here to celebrate our beloved M3 and all its goodness, whether it's got a DCT or 6MT? A guy who's had a chance to own both is surely a target for envious people.

That may sound wise when printed with a fortune cookie but I'm not sure why someone would envy a guy who owned the same exact car with two different transmissions.

Because the lucky guy gets to sample both flavors of transmissions on a great car when most people are lucky to just have one. It's kind of like the guy who has a wife with both beautiful legs and nice breasts that are real.

Unfortunately, to the general public, an M3 just looks like any regular 3 series. Only an enthusiast can recognize the subtle styling differences between the two of them. Most cars that become classics tend to have a unique styling that stands out from the crowds. An M3 doesn't really stand out that much from the rest of the masses on the road. The GTS maybe does, but plain jane grey M3 don't. Obviously no one can predict the future, but the chances of the E9X M3 (especially if it isn't one of the limited edition models) becoming a classic are very slim. In fact, I doubt the E60 M5 will become a classic either, judging by how cheap and common they are retailing on autotrader for example.
I agree with what you are say to a point. Post war BMWs in general, with the exception of the 507, do not have much of a presense in the classic car market, I also agree that to the vast majority of the public an M3 is just another small BMW in a sea of BMWs and can be regarded as a souped up 3 Series.

That being said it is hard to predict what the future holds. Who would have predicted 40 years ago that the prices of souped up versions of generic American mid size cars and Pony Cars would be where they are today. The prices of Shelby Mustangs, Camaro Z28s, Hemi Cudas, etc, are through the roof.

That is not really true. There are a lot of classic sports cars, some literally worth millions, that are raced in vintage races,

http://vscca.org/

Over the next few weeks there will be major vintage racing events at Laguna Seca, Lime Rock, Watkins Glen and other venues where there will be classic Ferraris, Bugattis, Jaguars, Maseratis, etc. racing,
