Harry's GPS LapTimer Pro for iPhone

All I want is a lap time. I don't care about how much G I pulled or filming a video as I have a Go Pro mounted already. Will I be fine by just putting the phone in my pocket? I have a iphone 4S

^ no it's best that it has open view to the sky. get the ultimate gps device - that will help too... I've found that the built in one will be off as much as 1s

The 4s has a much improved GPS module so you should not need a better external GPS for your 4S if all you are looking for is lap times. You can also go with a free app likes CMS Lap Timer; it does only lap times; no other bells and whistles.

You probably won't need an external GPS, especially if you have a newer Android phone. I would try without one.

OBD -- check Amazon for "ELM 327" bluetooth units. You should be able to get one for <$20. If I remember correctly, you want one that is version 1.4 or newer, but you might want to double-check that (been awhile since I bought one). I would buy from Amazon and worst case, if it doesn't work, return it. Though I had no problems with mine and I just picked a random one from Amazon

Here is a very short vid at VIR made with my iphone4S mounted on a tri pod in the rear seat - center of the E92. I have no external GPS, using only the iphone. This was a test to see if the phone would be able to function on its own. Please excuse the quality of the picture as I had difficulty loading it into youtube.

Those of you running 20+ min sessions, how are you saving/uploading video? I tried at Putnam last month and lost all video or it wouldn't save. Going to Mid-Ohio on Thursday and don't want a repeat! I'm running iPhone 4S 16GB and can bring my PC to save and clear to after each session. Any idea file size for video with or without overlay?

Problem is that if you use an Iphone it needs to be a WIFI OBD reader. Usually those are 75+. I went with Kiwi since it was available at Fry's, much easier to return.

Bluetooth works for Android phones.

Where HLT did you find your answer?

I know it has a housekeeping section for the video. What I've started doing is taking the best lap per session, applying the overlap and deleting the rest. However in the past I've been able to record 5x20mins sessions just with video, but I've removed music from my phone.

That post was a follow-up on Post #87 discussing Android phones only, definitely can't use those cheap modules with the iPhone.

Though actually the newest HLT beta build supports bluetooth (I have been experimenting with it and the GoPoint BT1). Whenever the newest build gets supported by Apple, you'll be able to use bluetooth.

But they are still obscenely expensive compared to the Android options

Third section down talks about memory and resolution usage. I'm assuming you're using a 32GB iPhone? With no songs on mine I seem to be hitting my max with a 25 minute session. I'm going to try lower resolution as well.

Also, do you apply the overlay and then delete laps or vice versa?

I have a 16GB IPhone, so maybe I've recorded (just iphone video) 4-5X20mins sessions my mistake. Now that I've switched to HLT, I take the best 1-2 laps per session, apply the overlay then delete the remaining laps.

If its a multi-day event, I copy the overlayed video off to my pc after looking at the best few laps and removing the slower ones.

For I4s users, putting in your pocket does work if all you want is a lap time

This a video that I used a GoPro Hero2 and Harry's law timer video PiP. The lap timer Pro continued to record video without interruption. So I have 8 laps out of 9 with overlay. The 9th cut because I ran out of storage on my iPhone.

This a 20 minute session at the Nürburgring Sprint Strecke (short). They let you run any street legal vehicle including motorcycles. It's great fun ... next video will be on the Nordschleife. Hope you enjoy!!

btw, the Lap timer is the bomb ...

So has anyone used the predictive lap functionality on Harry's yet? That's honestly all I care about. I need it for an event coming up in just over a week and I won't have a chance to test it at speed until I get to the track. Any suggestions? I have an iPhone4 (non-S) and plan to use the standard GPS unless I hear otherwise.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Used HLT yesterday at the track. Was able to record video and lap but it won't overlay. I have iPhone 5. I'll click overlay and it says its being processed. After its done, nothing happens. No video in my photo app to see. Any suggestions?

Where are you looking for the vid? Should be in your Photo apps camera roll.

Hmm, never had that problem. Do you have enough memory left on your phone? Vids tend to be fairly large.

Hope you get it sorted, maybe power off and turn on the phone??

Here is a video from VIR using HTL with iPhone4.

At times i did run into issues with HTL. The video, overlayed map and sound were not synced and they were all at different points.

I would suggest remove all your music from your iphone to maximize available storage capacity. Turn off notifications so it wont interrupt the recording, and tell your friends not to call or text you

I couldnt use HTL in Summit Point last week, for some reason it was crashing or getting interrupted all the time, very annoying.

I have the iPhone5 now but cant test it since the RAM mount hasnt come up with the holder for iphone5.

Use the ram x-grip for the iPhone 5
