I know the M3 has start/stop but did they make a mistake saying it also has the rest of the stuff like brake energy regeneration and other features?

This generation M5/M6's engine will be overshadowed by Ferrari's 458 engine for good.. Great result though

Can you show me a better source so that we can all see when N55 engine won this Award? It is obviously number 5 among 6 candidates in this year and it was the N54 last year too but if I remember wrong and all these sources are misleading then where is the true source?

In the meantime this is what was awarded and what was told last year (2011), quoted from the car advice web site which itself quotes the Panel member which awarded in 2011:

Taking the 2.5- to 3.0-litre award was BMW’s 3.0-litre direct-injection twin-turbo petrol straight-six engine. The engine will power the upcoming BMW 1 Series M Coupe. It’s also a derivative of the current BMW 135i, BMW 335i, BMW 535i, and xDrive35i model engines. This will be the fifth year running for the engine, although it has been revised over the years. It produces 225kW and 400Nm in standard trim. Panelist Padraic Deane said,

“Amazing torque levels with super flat distribution. Add to that the masterful use of turbos and high precision injection and you’ve got a superb engineering product.”
That's the link were it is clearly stated the N55 won (before that the N55 never competed as it wasn't in the market)
http://blog.autoworld.com.my/index.p...lts-announced/

Here's a quote of what they said:
"2.5-litre to 3-litre – BMW N55B30 3.0-litre Twin-Scroll Turbo

This category has been BMW’s playground since the award’s inception, with 2003 and 2004 being the only years that the gong did not land in Munich. This year, it’s a one-two finish for the Bavarians with the petrol-powered N55B30 twin-scroll turbo engine taking top honours followed by the twin turbo version of the N57D30 3.0-litre diesel.

Most BMW models bearing the 35i designation now use the N55, though some, like the Z4, continue with the older twin turbo N54 of similar performance. The engine produces 306hp and 400Nm, the latter served on a window that spans from 1,200 to 5,000rpm."

And to finish i only say that this year the award returned to the N54 because they awarded the "evolution" of the N54 not the original one, that's very clear when they quote the M Coupe, Z4is and 335is

No N55, or did the judges consider them pretty much the same?

Please check my post before, there is N55, it was one of the candidates in the 2.5 to 3.0 liter category but it ended up fifth after N54T, new 3.0 liter Mperformance diesel, Boxster's 2.7 liter, regular BMW 3.0 diesel. The sixth and last after N55 is Audi/VW V6 TDI.

I see what they say, there really is a lot of contradicting statements from last year since in 2011 they were also saying "this is going to be the engine in coming 1M" and also "fifth time in a row", these all clearly say one thing that they were talking about N54 but then they also say what you quote, maybe in 2011 some judges really messed up, don't know. But this year there is no confusion, see my post before this one. Both N54T and N55 were competing together with 4 other engines, result and points are everywhere in internet. N54T was considered even better than the new M Performance 3.0 liter diesel (which I think a fantastic engine) and N55 was fifth only. This is how they judged, that is a fact. You can consider that a better engine, you have all the right to do so but they did not. It is a more efficient, cleaner and technologically a newer concept engine, does not impress the judges more at the end despite all these.

Ok for the V8 and Mini. The others may be the best engine, but not for the cars they\

3.2 olde m3 is by far better than the old 3.0 (now turbocharged...). A for cylinder 328... Jesus are we ( BMWs) starting to compete with Audis??? Hope not... Let's try to learn with the new Porsche engines (and cars...).

Learn from Porsche's engines? I sure hope not. I test drove a 991 C2S recently as a probable replacement for my E92 M3. I was bitterly disappointed. As far as engine note goes, it's no where near the music from the S65 V8. It's probably fine if u have never owned the S65 before.

I have never said the N55 is better than the N54, but as a guy who have owned both of them and comparing them both in stock form (not counting mods) the N55 is the better engine, as i said in my posts before, it is very clear from the statement that what re impressed the judges was the higher output of the N54T, especially in the M Coupe with the overboost, remember that last year the original N54 was still out there in a couple of cars, so when the N54 competed with the N55 in equal outputs, the N55 got the award not the N54 im just saying that. It would be very strange that when an engine doesnt changes one year you chose one over the other and next year you exchange places. It's also very clear that the engine that won this year was the N54T, the one that was tune by BMW M, not the original N54 with equal output to the N55

I traded my S65 for a N54T. I am currently awaiting the outcome of the new M3/M4. Both badass in their own right but the S65 is beautiful and. I do miss it. I wonder that the petrol version of the triturbo will be like. A BMW heart for the FTMW.

To those of you who think the N54T in the so called "M" cars and "iS" cars are any better than the N54T you can find in a regular 2007-2010 335i, give me a break.....the only different is the tune! You can buy any off-the-shelf tune from Burger tuning, Vishnu, or Cobb and blow the doors off any stock N54T "M" and "iS" cars. I am the proud owner of two N54T cars and have a JB3 in one of them - the result is phenomenal with no loss of reliability, gas mileage and have no problems at all. The benefits are zero turbo lag, huge amount of torque all the up to 6000 rpm and just plain fun to drive. The S65 is a great engine but is best appreciated on the track, where revving to 8000 rpm won't land you a ticket, or worse, in jail.

I can see why you would want the N54T for its daily driving virtues. In the perfect world I would have N54T, S65, S85, and S54 all in the same garage. I came very close to realizing that dream but am still searching.......I guess that's the journey for us car guys.

It's just a representative photo (showing several BMW engines) for the story on our homepage.

It's no use. Everyone who owns an N54 powered car is hung up on the fact that they have two snails under the hood. I'm not sure if it's because they can't wrap their head around the dual-inlet design in the N55, or if they've just got their heads up their asses, but I just decided to let them live in their own world.
