Would drive coast to coast?

I've driven x-country 6 times by myself (LA to NY). Do yourself a favor and just ship the car and save yourself a bunch of time. There's long stretches of nothing and it's not worth it IMO.

If future cost of repairs are a concern, consider buying an extended warranty before the trip. Also you may want to have an Indy shop go through the car prior to the trip but otherwise it could make for a great experience.

I would think this to be overkill, my car is new and has less then 4,000 KM (2,485) on the odometer after returning from a trip the past 4 days form the Henry Ford and the Corvette museum perhaps later in her lifetime I have INDY check her condition

Six times! Well I figure I am good for one. I think I would enjoy the boring parts more in the M than in a uhaul. I might get lucky and find a few enthusiasts along the way.

Actually, I cry in the uhaul if I came across some good stretches with car flying by.

I am leaning towards driving and bonding with the M. When I came to Oregon the company I worked for moved me and my car, a 1987 Mercury Cougar (swapped to a 5 speed, 4 wheel disc and a GT 5.0 crate motor of 285Hp vs the 150Hp that was stock) was trucked over. It was very convenient.

This time I am footing the bill (yes ivwish i could have negotiated some assistance) and plan to spend more for comfort. The current plan is to pack everything into boxes and leave it in the garage. Drive across with the bare essentials. Once I am in an apt, I'll order a POD or similar, have the neighbors load it and be done with it. Nothing will be needed immediately. That saves me from storage at the other end too.
It isn't cheapest, but I am currently willing to pay for the convenience.

If I do this, I am sure there will be times along the trip that I will wish I had done otherwise, but I hope someday I will be able to say, "I've driven from coast to coast and advise others to do it or not do it". I don't see this ever happen again (if so it will be in a truck or helping someone else). Hmmm, actually with two 20x year olds, I might did myself doing it twice to help drive if the decide to follow Mom and Dad.

I have driven thousands of miles all over the country and wouldn't trade it for anything. The only time I had an inkling of a 2nd thought was January in AK/YT w/my little Jetta TDI. The snow was so deep if I stopped I'd be stuck for sure...still SO glad I did it. The experience, time, freedom, scenery, music, etc - wouldn't trade it for anything. Currently laid up (post-op) and can't drive at least 4wks (M soon to be delivered) and I am chomping at the bit just to be free to drive.

I hope you'll enjoy the experience and definitely see things you wouldn't otherwise

Who did you use and how long did it take for delivery?

I've driven coast to coast with a rental. I would suggest you to ship your car to Colorado Springs, and drive from there. There are a lot of M3 roads in that area

Nice idea, but not enough time. Long story but that would be awesome. I hope someone who has planned better sees this.

I haven't done it in my M but I have done close to that in a 3 series. To the Florida Keys and back for me is about ~2000 miles and I've done it many times to scuba dive with friends. Don't worry about it other than gas and oil, BMW's are made to drive

I've done a lot of road trips in my life (have hit 46 of the 50 states). If you're going from urban centre to urban centre (or wealthy area to wealthy area), then it's great, but I think part of the fun of taking road trip is going off the beaten path.

My concerns with taking a M3 on a long road-trip is that:
* it has a small gas tank
* it needs premium gas, which isn't always easy to get if you're traveling in rural areas
* it suffers from poor fuel economy
* it may attract too much attention in some areas
